I heard fox is actually pretty much equal to king but uses less proprietary parts so things like shims aren't so hard to find and are a lot cheaper

What are you smoking? Theiy're all pretty much the same thing, mostly just personal preference aka color.

as for fox not making quality product, you should check your sources, you couldn't be further off

In terms of quality, the order I've heard is:
    1. Bilstein
    2. King Racing series
    3. Fox
    4. King Prerunner series

Of course this leaves off the smaller players like Radflo and IVD, both of which make great products.

    9300s

I'm not kidding. Their build quality is top notch.

I'm not comparing a 5100 to a 2.5" coilover, mind you. Check out their 9300 series.

i drool over those about once a week.

the cutaway of the shock body alone shows you how much thinking went into them. may be others, but it's the only one i've seen with cooling fins on the back side of a bypass

and here's that build quality at work

Well when you think about it makes sense, Bilstein makes shocks/suspension setups for many high performance cars and vehicles, so that same quality and skills are put forth on the offroad market!
