2nd gen I4 vs 1st gen v6.

What would you guys prefer if they both had the same options (4x4 manual trd etc)? Whats the difference in HP Torque and MPG etc? which truck would be better? Lets hear some opinions!

 

2010 Tacoma I-4:
159 hp, 20-26 mpg

2004 Tacoma V6:
190 hp, 17-19 mpg

if you want power get the V6
if you want mpg get the 4 cyl
plain and simple.

 

Man I thought the 2nd gen 4 cyl would almost be comparable .

I was gonna say basically the same thing. If you need it for towing then get the V6, If you drive a lot get the 4 banger for the mpg. All depends on YOUR needs and preferences.

Of course with that said, are you looking at 2 particular trucks? If so then you have to weigh out which is the best deal vs what you need it for.

 

Going into college. So mainly interstate driving, even though I'm only an hour away. But I like the get up and go. So I'm conserned about the 4cyl lacking power.

 

I’ve had a 1993 SR5 since 1994, and it died on me. It had the V6. I have a 2007 Camry with the 4 cylinder, and it has more get up and go than my old pickup ever did, so I went with the 4 cylinder in my 2011 Tacoma Access Cab 4x4. It does lack the ability to start off in second gear like I could with my 1993 truck and doesn’t seem to have the get up and go capability of my Camry. I suppose I will get used to it. Manual transmissions in both trucks. Auto in the Camry.

 

IMO if you're looking for "get up and go" don't get a truck. Even the V6 doesn't really have get up and go... yea it may be better than the 4 banger but if you're looking for speed and mpg get a car. lol i don't wanna sound like a douche but thats the reality of it...

I would agree. The V6 had more torque than my brand new 4 banger does, but that’s about it.

 

Drive them both. See how you feel about them. Then decide.

 

Hands down the 6 has huge amounts more power then the 4 I have owned both. If you are going to tow get the 6 if your are just hauling a few things the 4 is fine same goes for hauling fire wood out of the woods for example but climbing hills with a load the 6 wins the contest. My 4 cyl got about 2-3 MPG better then the 6 but I can live with that for the extra power I would never be able to haul my camper with the 4 I would ware my arm out shifting.

 

I would have loved the 4 but my son bought one and it rattles like a desiel.

 

30 hp at the crank isnt really that much difference to the wheels so you're not really losing that much power. The biggest difference in these two trucks is power to weight ratio! The 04 v6 has more power and weighs less! And the topic is kinda strange because they are two different model years. But take the 2010 2TR and put 4.56 gears in it and you probably will match the 2004 v6 in a race ( if thats what you're looking for) and you will still get 8 or so better mpg

 

I understand the get up and go is better in a car but unfortunatly I do not fit in cars that well and the fit of a first gen is decent I can handle it. I also like the idea of a truck. But by get up and go I don't mean I will be trying to hit 100+ mph in less then 8 seconds haha . The fastest I will probably go is 100 if I feel like getting on it. I know you don't race trucks. By get up and go I mean I want to be able to zip across the intersections etc and the only thing I would be pulling is a small trailor or four wheeler in the bed. I do like the idea of test driving them both. And not trying to make a wierd title post. It was more of a comparison of will the I4 of a newer tacoma match the v6 of an older? Plus there very similar in price. I think that responded to nearly every quote.

 

I also live at altitude.. Colorado haha if that makes a difference.

 

im looking at a 1st gen v6 right now. I've test drove a few and they do get up and go, nothing like a car, but it definitely surprised me! my vote goes there. and if your looking for mpg, dont get a truck....

 

I don't think its out of the question to WANT/NEED a truck, and if you are to get a tacoma which not only has good mpg but is a truck. I think he gets that a car can get up to 40 mpg and a truck is near 20 most of the time. But lets see your car make it through the CO winter and all of a sudden that 20 mpg difference has you idling at 0 stuck in your driveway...point is that a truck can get you through things and a car gets good mpg a Tacoma does a pretty good job of both.

 

I never said the car had to be 2wd, learn to read

 

Haha you got him with your subaru all wheel drive. . I don't see many 4x4 cars.. or awd as a matter of fact. ..

 

idk if they make 4wd cars, would surprise me but.....
