New shoes 255/85-r16

I think I have finally gotten to the point where I can stop modding the truck. I could not decide what tires to go with after I lifted it but I know I had to get something bigger and better than the rugged fails that were on it. I finally decide on 255/85-r16's Cooper Discoverer S/T tires. I really like how they look and they dont rub with 3 inches of lift. They might if I really stuff them. At some point ill go find a big rock and find out lol. Here are some before and after pics.

 

They just barly touch if you take out your front swaybar and fully stuff it...i do mean fully

 

btw...get some spacers it will really help give it some stability and look WAY better..

Hard2kill I thought running spacers put extra stress on the bearings? Those tires def. look like pizza cutters. I wouldn't mind a wider stance.

 

Very nice and clean looking truck. New tires look way better. Any reason you didn't want to get a slightly fatter tire?

i drive about 600miles a week highway and wheel the shit outta her when i get then chance....tall skinny do awsome in all situations....hundreds of us run spidertrax 1.25in spacers ....its just like having a standard 4.50in backspace wheel.....when you combine big spacers 2-3in. and run wide offset wheels is when you run into trouble....just dont cheap out on spacers...get SPIDERTRAX...there proven and reliable...i love mine

I liked the look of the narrow tire. I know they are quite dependable in just about all situations id find myself in. I wanted to be a bit different with the tires and I really didn't want to fool with the cab mounts.

Ill have to look into those spacers. Are you running them front and rear?

Im really impressed by the ome suspension upgrade. Its a bit stiffer but when i take any rough terrain at speed is is quite a bit smoother then the stock suspension and i find that the truck doesnt lean into corners nearly as much as it use to.

 

yes i run them front and rear with no swaybar...my tires are km2's which are a touch bigger cause of the aggressive lugs and i only had to trim alil of the inner fender plastic....does not touch cab mount...truck is actually more stable with the spacers..we wheeled hard at rausch creek for 3 days and the tall skinnys did equal if not alil better in all situations....mind you ive always been a wide tire guy and i have no regrets going skinny..i promise you that 1.25in spacers front and rear with no swaybar it will be a entirely different animal...

Intuitively you would guess the wider tires would be better as it would give better traction right?

 

I don't have the link, but there is an awesome, emperical, write up on expodition portal of how/why skinny tires are better in almost any situation.

wide slick tires are best on dry pavement, but off-road skinny tires have more pressure on the contact patch.

 

i have that bookmarked on my home computer, but can't get to it from work.

general idea is:
skinny tires dig, wide tires float.

that means for grass, dirt, rock, gravel, shallow mud and similar surfaces, a skinny tire will generally have more traction.

wide tires do well in sand, deep mud, snow, and other conditions where "digging" means stuck, not more traction.


think about walking down a grassy hill when it's just rained. to keep from slipping and eating shit, instead of walking normally, with a flat foot, you'll use your heel, as the smaller contact area creates a high pressure (pressure=force/area) which will dig in and yeild better traction.

between a 255 and and 265, you probably won't notice much difference. when you go to a 305 or 315, you'll deffinately see a change and traction/float characteristics.

for example there was a insanely steep hill on fri in RC that we could NOT even walk down...me and 2 other guys all had new km2's....they slid with tires locked up i was able to stop on the hill.......they had 11in wide km2s mine are 10in wide...

 

Thanks guys for the comments guys. I d wish there were a few more tire choices in this size too. I probably would have gone with a bit less aggressive A/T tire. That being said I like the tires they aren't that much louder than the rugged fails and should be much better than the old tires.

Ive tried to keep the truck looking clean. I put the bull bar and tube steps on before i found this site. If i had been here first Id have put on sliders. At some point i probably will put on sliders and get rid of the bull bar. I just haven't found a aesthetically pleasing way to put on my piaa lights. lol not to mention i saw some sweet atx mojave teflon wheels. Other than that I really cant see myself doing much else. One of my fav. mods was the hid headlight conversion. It was a bitch to do and I dont know if I would do it again just for the pain in the ass factor.(3m window adhesive is one of the most tenacious things I have ever seen. It is sticky and is tough to get off once it touches something. lol) That being said they throw out way more light and ive never seen another tacoma around where I live with them. Ive been asked a dozen times where I got those headlights.
