I want posi traction...

i did the search and haven't found a direct answer for my question. i keep reading on here that the lsd's clunk, rub, etc. in my mustang, the traction loc is factory and does none of this. few of the aftermarket units have these problems either.

is there no aftermarket or oe unit for my 98 yota that won't give me these problems? it is a 2.4 reg cab 2wheel drive. i'd rather not have an electronic locker. i want something that's there 24/7. thanks for any input.

by the way, if the yota rear can't work like my 8.8 ford unit, maybe it's time for a little rear end fabricating...like a ford 8.8 in the taco...

 

I suspect much or all of what you've read about 'clunking' or 'rubbing' has been in relation to lockers and not LSD's.

I'm not knowledgeable about Mustangs, so I don't know if the traction loc you refer to is a locking or a limited-slip differential.

If it's a limited-slip differential (LSD) you're after, you want a Detroit TrueTrac for the Tacoma '7.5' rear end.

 

My truck has never spun only on tire.... it doesn’t matter if its pavement or ice they both spin.... an its a base package???

 

Just wondering here, but why would you want posi-trac in a 2.4 2wd truck? What do you expect to do with it? Sounds pointless to me unless you've got a big motor in it or turbo/SC etc...

 

'Posi-Trac' is the GM branded Limited Slip Differential. He wants LSD instead of his open differential. Has nothing to do with motor size.

 

I know that, I'm just wondering why one would want LS on a truck w/ a small motor and 2wd. What performance gains are you really getting from that? I just wanna know why he would spend money on this??

 

what is all involved in the install of the detroit tru trac lsd on a 2006 tacoma with open diff? just R & R or is there more to it?

 

Why does motor size comply with more traction? Have you ever been stuck?

I don't know his reasons, but I have had the same thoughts. 2wd 4cyl base model with an open rear end. For me, it's not that I try to go 4 wheeling with it, it's so that if one wheel starts to slip (for whatever reason) the other wheel will still turn. Hopefully, that will keep me from getting stuck in say.....a field that is just wet enough for it to not get good traction...or with slick roads in the winter. The 4cyl may not be a huge powerhouse, but it can spin the tires.

All in all, I hope that I don't need it. It's more of a safety/security feature that I hope I don't ever need. I've only needed it (or 4wd) once before, but I was able to get unstuck anyways.

 

SO what is the part number and all the parts needed to make this happed?

Or do you need to go to a junk yard and find these part and make it work?

Reason to have it, it is safer.
If you drive mountain roads you want good traction.
If you hual gear you want good traction
If you do anything on a race track you want good traction....

 

i just want to have it if i need it. i hunt in a sandy area, and although it's not a pre or 4wd, it gets the job done. i just want the extra insurance a lsd would give me. we just had about 6 inches of snow here and on my way to get 2 new rear tires, i felt like i was in a drift competition. my f150, which has a traction loc (LSD) never does this.

my second reason is that my son gets the truck in 2 years. he wants to put a turbo and built motor in it...a built 2.4 at that! then the lsd will really help.

as for the "small" motor comment, you'd be surprised at what my little yota has been through in it's 200k miles! with enough weight in the bed (as a work truck) to make the leaf springs look like they were upside down, it still kept up with traffic and never complained.

anyway, i've found the powertrax on ebay for a great price and now i'm waiting on it to arrive. thanks for the input.

by the way, the part # for the powertrax unit is 1611 for the 7.5 rear.

 

i must say it is a royal beotch to have 1 wheel off in the mud and one on the pavement..but thats when i put er in 4hi but obviously he cant do that.... 1 wheeler squeelers suck...lol.....

 

lmao....i've never been stuck and i don't have to step up to get in my yota (tacos are either full of meat or pink!)...lol. and, as the wife will tell ya, i've learned to do with 2...well, you get the picture...lol.

I thought about a LSD unit, but seeing how taking corners when the road is wet one wheel spins now and I fishtail, I can imagine how bad the rear end would want to 180 if both wheels were spinning.

Some sort of "switchable" LSD (not switchable locker) would be nice.

if this thing works like the traction-loc in my mustang, that shouldn't be a problem, especially with the auto. the stang is a stick and only spins when i want it to (or more like when the wife wants it to! she rarely lets me drive it...lol)

 

There's always this method, read post #20... probably not the best for a street driven 4x4 though. Go Detroit Locker or true trac lsd.
