Newb question: How can I identify if my truck is a TRD

Recently purchased an 02 Xtracab with 72k. Noticed truck was a repaint and with no TRD stickers in the rear. After checking out the underside I saw the OE Bilstiens shocks. So my question is how can I identify if the truck is truely a TRD (vin number?). Did non TRD's come with Bilstein shocks?

Non-TRDs don't come with the yellow&blue billies, but that doesn't mean someone didn't put them on.

Rear locker is the best giveaway. Your dash should look like this.

 

look at diff.

 

take your VIN and go to http://www.decodethis.com/ It generally works for me when I use it for work.

 

He has a 1st gen so his dash wont look like that

 

...It's used, and you're talking about a "sticker", after all. Not definitive by any means either way.

He means is it a factory locker.
Some say 4cyl 5-speeds could have come with lockers, but no one could produce a pic of one in another thread. Everyone just says "my friend has one".
My truck is a TRD, but the only TRD left is the sticker. The suspension has all been changed and its a 4-banger so no locker anyway.

Yes my truck has that switch. So with the switch and the bilsteins I may have a TRD, thats a bonus.

 

IIRC '98 thru '04 TRD package models were available on trucks with the 2.7L. If they were autos they did not get the e-locker. If they were 5-speeds, they did get the e-locker.

 

Show me a 4cyl with a locker. No one has even produced evidence of this unicorn. In another thread no one could find one or show any toyota sales documents that said there was a locker on a 4cyl. Out of all the TW and TTORA members, no one actually has one. (no one that has ever posted pics)

 

I took my moms 02' Tacoma TRD Auto for a drive the other day and it has the factory e-locker.

It also might depend on where you live because its a stepside, and i havent seen too many stepsides in th US

 

Is your mothers a v6 though? because all V6 TRDs came with the elocker, manual or auto. Its the 4cyl that is questionable.
