A friend lives in NE. He uses a product called Salt Terminator to rinse the under body weekly. The product is made for cleaning off shore fishing tackle, flushing engines. Worked very well in Florida for the boat and wave runners.

There are a few brands, Salt Terminator, Salt Away, Salt X,......should be helpful in the corrosive states.

So the recommendation when I get mine is that the first thing to do is coat the chassis inside/out with POR15 or some similar quality coating.

When people say they spray oil on the frames, what exactly are they
    doing?

Spraying oil on the frame, quite literally. It was popular practice when I was a young lad and even before to take the five or so quarts you drained out of your crankcase and fill a pressure sprayer or even brush apply the old oil to the wheel wells and underside of your vehicle.

This kept the rusting to a minimum, but you can imagine the minute dust and sand particles stuck to it in the off season. So you had to clean that bitch off otherwise you would get rust anyway, from the sand and dirt attracting and holding any moisture. Something you wanted to prevent in the first place, no? That's called irony, no pun intended.

Google WaxOyl or you can mix your own.
My friend Jay & his Dad swear by mixing Husquavana bar & chain oil, melting paraffin wax adding that and putting the mixture in a sprayer. Apply after you pressure wash underneath, let dry then use the sprayer. His truck undercarriage as well as his Dads looks amazing well on their older non-tacoma trucks & doesn't attract anything.
Here is a link to the WaxOyl & its big with the Land Rover crowd in my area.

Jay is going to help with my tacoma frame this Fall.

Having wife take my 03 in for inspection on Monday. Its a Wisconsin truck i guess we'll see :(

I lived in England for three years and had a 78 Series III landy that i rebuilt from the ground up. Waxoyl is REALLY popular over there, and would probably work on our tacos if we sprayed in inside the frame as well. Honestly not sure if thats possible... are there holes you could fit a nozzle through?

What i don't get is the new frames they install. If people are having problems with the 2nd gen tacos are they still putting the same shitty frames in for replacement??? When i rebuilt my landy I bought a fully galvanized steel frame from paddocks and put that in it. Thats what toyota should be doing!

It could be worse: TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. --

Ford is recalling more than a million pickup trucks because their gas tanks can fall off and cause fires.

The recall, announced Monday, covers 1.1 million F-150, F-250 and Lincoln Blackwood pickups. The models involved were sold in cold-weather states where road salt can cause straps metal straps holding up the tanks to rust. If the straps break, the tanks can hit the ground, rupture and catch fire.

No the problem is not in fact a problem at all. 1st gen trucks had the ability to rust through and fold in half in a period of 1-5 years and a LARGE number of them were doing it. Now when anyone sees any trace of rust on their tacoma frame, even if it is a 2nd gen they start panicking and crying. As of yet I have not seen ONE 2005 with rust all the way through or even close. Some rust is normal and unavoidable even with galvanizing.

Best undercoating I've ever used. It's motorcycle chain lube. Very oily and slimy but it works awesome to protect the frame. Messy to apply but it dries on there after a few days and seeps into crevices and stuff. Works as a lubricant for steering components and suspension also. No need to rough the paint before, just spray away.

And you guys are missing an important concept here. As you go down the road sand and crap chips the paint that's on the frame, acting as a sandblaster. Once the paint is blasted it loses integrity and water can get under it and sit inside. Then the bare metal is exposed to water for long periods of time and it rusts.
