Different Torque for Toyota Wheel Locks?

Cleaning out the tool shed yesterday and came across the packaging for the Toyota wheel locks my truck came with. Instructions on the packaging says to tighten the wheel lock to 74 ft-lb (instead of 85 ft-lb as specified in the owner's manual). Anyone else seen this? Is the wheel lock significantly weaker than a regular lugnut?

 

I see no reason why the threads on the wheel lock would be any weaker than that of a standard lug nut.

Two possibilities for the discrepancy are that Toyota listed a lower torque because the surface contact area of the socket-like key is much less than on a standard lug, or that they sell those same locking lugs to fit sveral vehicles with slightly different torque values, and listed a "one-size-fits-all" sort of number.

Yep. I stumbled upon the answer while responding to another thread. Turns out all the Toyota car and crossover models, from the Yaris to the Camry to the 7-pass Highlander, are specified for 76 ft-lb, despite running the same size lugnuts as the Tacoma.
