    Ah yea, I see where the confusion is now. At the time of my post, we were were discussing whether they should be used with any amount of lift at all, which is why dsm's name was included. My question was in response to the quote below.

    I see now that the way I phrased my question made it seem as though all three vendors recommended 2", instead of all three vendors recommending some amount of lift, with the max of the three being 2".

    I see now that your recommendation is in line with that of the manufacturer, and I apologize for the turmoil I inadvertently helped to cause.



    I'd also like to point out to everyone that Sonny and Marco's offer above is another example of how DSM does really go above and beyond for their customers.They are offering to replace the shock, even though the shock was used with a rear lift setup above DSM's recommendation. Class act! :thumbsup:

    The lesson for this thread:


    1. Disconnect rear shocks.
    2. Lift truck.
    3. Extend brake lines if necessary.
    4. Measure @ full axle droop.
    5. Measure @ full compression.
    6. Write measurements on paper.
    7. Go shopping for a shock to match measurements.

    Also, might have to extend bump stops depending on shock. U wanna hit bump stops before bottoming shock. Or next thread, " My 25 inch compressed shock bottomed out and blew a seal". That'll be a whole new can of worms.

    DSM rocks. All of my shock purchases have been from DSM and always will be from DSM. They know their stuff and great pricing to TW members. Cant beat that

    FYI, I've been using my OEM brake lines too


    ...not to say that you shouldn't use longer lines...I'm just saying that I'm not, and haven't had any issues.

    This is very true. I called a couple of weeks ago and picked their brains about options for lifting my Pre-Runner. They must have spent 25 minutes on the phone with me and I was up front and honest at the beginning of the conversation letting them know I was not ordering parts that day. Not many vendors would take the time to to go over the different options available for what your trying to achieve especially knowing you weren't ready to order parts.

    I bought my Fox's through DSM for my rear. I stopped by their shop and Sonny and Marco came out to make sure I bought what I needed. I would contact them directly have your measurments ready and they will guide you as to what you need to buy. These are perfectly matched to my Allpro leaf pack, and Sonny custom valved them for me before I put them on. Now that is a vendor!

    The problem is people read stuff here on TW and get the wrong impression on what they need to buy.

    does this go for the 1st gen as well? I had bilstein 5100's in the rear with a 3 inch lift... had to switch them out for my fabtech ones after i found that one was leaking... :(

    You would need to get a measurement to see if the 5100 was the appropriate length. This is not a blanket problem, just for those that have to much lift with a shock that can't handle it.

    A lot of good stuff going on in this thread in spite of Mx's unluckiness and a few eye opening bits of information.

    Now for some questions:
    In case of a broken rear shock with a 2" AAL, what would be the best replacement?
    Also, what other mods would help with piece of mind? (straps, longer brake lines, etc, etc)

    Well, I just got off the phone with DSM (not sonny or marco). I told him my mount-to-mount length (21" and some change). He said I could either get the 5125/5150's with an adapter (because they come with two loop ends) or he could try to find me some Fox shocks, and they could valve it for a Tacoma. Idk which I want to do. He said the shorter 5100's are too short for a 2" AAL and the longer 5100's are too long for a 2" AAL. hmmmmmmm decisions decisions.

    I wish I would have known that you called...

    Here's the thing....we already know the C478 5100s are too short. So call me with your address and I'll send you the longer 5100s to try. I agree that they may be tad too long on the compressed (if your ride is 21"), but you will stiil have more than 4" of shaft showing at ride height. And that leaves you with 5" of droop available. This, and adjust your bump stops as Zac808 mentioned might be your best option.

    But if you want to try something else, let us know...

    5100's front set to .85 w/eibach springs, 5100 rear w/toytec 2"AAL, Light Race UCA, 17" Black Rhino Ocotillo wheels, 265/70/17 KO2's, K&N drop in filter, Grill Craft front mesh, one piece driveshaft (vibes gone) rear diff breather mod, BHLM, Fog anytime, 886 reverse bulbs.
    Ok so now I'm super worried about my 5100 rear setup! Can anybody chime in on my setup. I recieved this in an email from DOWNSOUTH when I placed my order. "we ran out of the rcd part # be5-c477-t1 we are replacing with billstein part # be5-c475-h1. This is the same shock just a different part number." I DID NOT TALK TO ANYBODY FROM DSM WHEN I PLACED MY ORDER SO IF IT'S WRONG IT IS NO FAULT OF THERES!!! I just ordered off there website. I have a 2" aal in rear... are these the wrong shocks for a lift? I just wanna know before i hit the trails.
