Rear diff lock not working

My rear diff lock is not working. I have an 02 tacoma 2WD. i have pulled the switch out and tested the wires and they work fine and it is all conected. my emergency brake light is also sticking on when it is fully pushed in. could the rr diff lock not be coming on because it thinks the e brake is on?

 

No don't think so. Turn the key to the "on" position without starting the truck (so electronics work) and push the diff lock button while standing outside the truck. If you hear something from the diff then the actuator is getting power and trying to work, thus your problem will be mechanical not electrical. If you hear no sound then it's most likely an electrical problem. Also if the problem is mechanical the RR diff lock will just stay flashing, while if the problem is electrical than the light may not go on at all.

Mine was frozen and had dried salt on the inside of the actuator, so I took it apart and rebuilt/regreased the mechanism then sealed it back up with silicone on the outside.

 

As for the parking brake. I had the same problem. When you release the parking brake, and push it in all the way, pull it back out a little bit and twist the handle up then push it back in. I am assuming you have the parking brake kind were you pull on it not push with your foot.

 

When was the last time you had it locked ? & where in San Diego are you ??

 

as for the e brake, the adjustment spring is under the drivers side next to frame. there are threads on her about adjusting the e brake.

 

Also e brake, make sure you lube that pivot point under the drivers side next to the frame also. Mine was sticking and just needed a little lube and working fine. Lay under the truck at the driver's door and you will see where the cable from the handle comes into a bracket that pivots. Lube that pivot point. Then check adjustment.

i heard no noise so it is most likely electrical. and the light does not come on at all. and how long did it take you to take apart and rebuild the actuator.

 

last time i used it was about 3 or 4 months ago. and i live in san carlos close to la mesa

 

Well you live here in a pretty dry climate so I'd prolly rule out corrosion (unless you submerge your diff.) You could get a meter & see if your getting voltage to the actuator.. I know with 4x, sometimes you have to play with it a bit, but you say nothing is lighting up like ABS ,etc;

 

An hour maybe?
Since Toyota calls this a "non-serviceable" part, there is no instruction section in any manuals (at least I haven't found any).

 

Ok so I'm having basically the same problem except mine must be mechanical because i can hear the actuator trying to work... but the light keeps flashing and my abs light does not come on. What kinda mechanical problem is this? something that can be fixed easily or a PITA? I've never had mine actuated i bought the truck like 3 months ago and like an idiot didn't check it until today. Help.

Well this is pretty dumb to say but just to eliminate it, you have it in 4lo right? unless you have the grey wire mod.

 

I have already posted the link for the actuator rebuild in this thread. Just follow that. My truck did exactly what you are describing and that's how i fixed the locker.

if you are sure your hearing the solenoid working, then you'll have to play with it, slow , deliberate left/righthand turns till your gears line up, this can take a while sometimes

 

i figured it out. I feel really dumb for this but i put in an add-a-fuse and i saw a fuse for 4WD and i thought o.... well i dont have 4WD so i don't need to put that fuse in the back of the add-a-fuse to connect that circuit. but apparently the 4WD fuse is for your rear diff lock. and the fluid for my e brake was low.

 

dont feel dumb... you figured it out on your own instead of taking it to a shop right away...

and I was just about to say check your fuses, I hate them.
