That's true but even DOM wads up pretty easy if you make a bumper out of it that isn't tied into the cage.

Yes, especially if you don't build it right. That is just more reason to go with the cheap stuff when you are building bumpers and such.

You're right. I built one out of turds and straw just for that reason. What I meant was use chromoly with a yield strength of 85,000 psi if you are building a stand alone bumper without a cage, the material strength is more important without a structure. Mild just pretzels too easy, even a very minor nerf will munch it. I get that if you are reselling to guys who will never "use" a bumper using mild HREW will leave a larger profit margin, but it will also kill your company quickly. DOM isn't that expensive, try pricing out 4140.

I think HREW is plenty strong enough. I, as well as many others, have built rock sliders using HREW that get abused and take it quite well.

Your sliders have never taken a hit like Logans front bumper. And either way if you tie it into a cage its way better. When you take the entire weight of the truck extended out on the front end like that its going to bend if its not supported

Obviously it will be stronger if its tied into a cage, Im not arguing that. I also don't know who Logan is or how you know what I have done with my sliders:confused:

I understand what your saying though. If its not tied in might as well save some money. I just always think if Im gonna build it Im gonna build it right the first time

Logan is username. Its not possible to hit sliders like you would a front bumper. If you ever have hit downwards on your sliders at a rate of 65mph or more with the entire weight of your truck you did something wrong. If you never do that with your front bumper your doing something wrong

This is a crappy cell pic of a 70mph-0 deceleration into a road bank that had washed out overnight, almost endo'd. This bumper was DOM. When it wadded up it crushed the radiator and I lost most of the coolant. I patched it up with some alumaweld putty and topped off the coolant with a couple bottles of water and as much piss as I could squeek out, and I made it the 30 miles back to pavement. I learned DOM isn't really that strong. My sliders are 4130 and don't have so much as a dent after years of abuse, and neither does my new bumper.

With that said, HREW has it's place. I made these steps for the chase truck out of it, but I also realize it's a disco truck and rarely sees anything more hardcore than a dirt road. (08 2500HD Dmax)

That was pre-cage. I built the cage because I knew I would die without it, and might with it, lol.

Oh okay lol, so I'm assuming the cage is DOM?!

Awesome that you built it, wish I had skills like that!

The cage is a little over 100 feet of .120 wall 1.75" DOM, but it's gusseted in all the right places and "race legal". Like everything, it's a work in progress but I wouldn't flinch if I wiped out doing triple digits.

    Nice:thumbsup:

I don't really need for a cage...even though it might make me feel better!

And well just hope you never have to find out!

I used to be a tow truck driver back in the day, and I saw lots of horrible accidents that even a simple roll bar would have saved lives. Go stand on the roof of your truck and tell me you don't need one.

You have two friends that have accounts at patton's. Anyone can get one, it doesn't cost anything but saves loads plus they sell gussets, shock tabs, and heims.

This is very true...hail dented my roof, and it wasn't even big!

There isn't anyone around here that could build one...and I wouldn't trust my self in building one either!

Maybe sometime down the road (when I get another truck) I'll install one, better safe then sorry I guess!
