Manual Hubs

Just a thought for the oldtimers--of which I am one.
With all the difficulties that arise while lifting --why not just install Manual locking front hubs? Would that solve all the Vibration and cv wear and tear as a result of lifting??( realizing that 4x4 is actually used very little compared to regular hiway driving)
Personaly like manual hubs--low gear and no four wheel lock up. GREAT in creeping traffic(accident traffic). I am asking for input.
Had manuals on my 91--and really came in handy
Also should help fuel economy.
How much is a Cv replacement--Just one can run a Hundred-fifty-(guessing) .
In my opinion , manual hubs seem to be a GOOD option.
Am i correct in thinking this??

Yes, manual hubs are awesome. I wish i had them.

 

Yeah manual hubs would be great but it's expensive unless you find a old 1st Gen for parts. Ive priced it out at around 800 bucks with new parts.

 

I would kill to have manual locking hubs on my 96. I saw a conversion kit from ORS and it was over a grand. It was a premium kit with tough cv shafts.

I am about to change my cv's out. Inner boots are torn. Wouldnt have this problem with manual hubs (or not as often)! I got NEW shafts for about $90 a side. Lifetime warranty.

i speak for one of the manual hub owners in here. having manual hubs is no different from you guys owning a auto lock. only difference is that we have to lock our front diff when we get to bad terrains. the cv axles still gets bad angles and torn. will get vibes on driveshaft when lifted and occurs on the conditions of your truck.
having a manual hub is good, because when the front diff is lock, you just engage in 4wd and it will crawls. IMO, i'm glad i have a manual hub. i'm looking forward to upgrade my manual hubs to something better.

 

Im not sure if I understand what your saying, but it is very different than ADD. When you unlock the hubs, your CVs do not spin anymore, therefore decreasing wear and tear on them. Also, if you break a CV, just unlock that side and 3 wheel drive for the rest of the day if you dont have an extra. I've been thinking about getting manual hubs but it will be pricey.

 

I did manuals when I did my 4x4 conversion because of those issues. They have been great and haven't let me down yet. Plus since I have manual hubs I am running a locker in the front with no issues, just unlock for daily driving and when the going gets tough I lock'r in!

i havent come across that kind of situation where one side goes out. but yeah, when its the front is unlock, its less wear and tear. unless your alignment is off.

 

what does alignment have to do with manual hub preventing wear?

not if you have open diffs then it just spins the broken shaft faster and it flops around possibly breaking something else like a brake line or something the best thing to do in that situation is to do the trail in 2wd or winch yourself out

 

I miss the manual hubs in my 88 4Runner...never had a issue with the 4WD system or a torn cv boot and put close to 300,000 miles on that rig.

I think the laziness would almost be a good thing. It'd make people think twice about "should I really be in 4wd" ie. dry pavement but that's another threat all together...
