My Cobra 19DX IV with a 4 foot Firestik Antenna seemed to work real well during our trail runs. $30 at wally world for the radio. Around 75-80 for antenna and wire I think.

I'm a little behind times. I honestly don't care to much for CBs. I rather use hand held radios. The range on them decent enough. Everyone seems to choose CBs though so I guess I'll need to get one.

I'll take a look into those two. Most people on here seem to be using the firestik so I guess it's good.

If your going with a hood mount, a 3' firestick is plenty. If you mount of the back, like your rear bumper, might consider a 4'.

I'm running a uniden 520xl, seems to be working well.

handhelds become problematic in larger groups and don't have the same range. really helps when you have more than one group and you need to meet up.

The reason the cobra 19 is nice is because it fits in the pocket of a single DIN unit. See the pic from MrGrimm's setup below.

The firestik is used simply because it can be found anywhere - NAPA, Wal-mart, etc. I bought my Wilson Flex antenna from a CB shop and I've grown to love the difference - very thin, and I can practically bend it in half.

I run a 4' where I have mine. The goal is to have the antenna taller than the cab by a good margin

You want it above the ground plane. If the hood mount is is extended out a bit from the windsheild, the main ground plane becomes the hood, not the roof line. IIRC, yours is right at the base of your windshield isn't it?

I'll be mounting it on the rear bumper so it doesn't stick up so high.

I'm rarely out with more than one group and we typically don't stray too far from each other. But I do see your point on a general basis.

That's one of the reasons I didn't like the firestik. It looks like it'll end up breaking off it snagged on a branch/tree.

Mark, any more info on your 520xl? I read some reviews and people seem to happier with it against the Cobra 19. I've been looking at the Unidens for a little while and they seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Only that its been dependable and seems to have a good range. Uniden makes 2 models in the small form factor, the 510xl and 520xl. I can't remenber the function differences though. I think I paid about $50 for the 520.

If you put a spring between the mount and the antenna, you don't have to worry about breaking it off.

Ha I just realized I called you Mark. Sorry Mike, I was pming Mark and got that stuck in my head. I'll try to see if I can find a Uniden somewhere local (any recommendations?). As far as the antenna goes, you can add a spring but if the antenna gets caught between two branches you still risk breaking it. If you have a metal flexible one it'll survive longer so I'll probably go that route. I feel like I'm always driving through low branches and banging the stock radio antenna on everything.

Anyone know a small camp ground that's quiet, peaceful and on a small lake in the area? Something free of meth heads and homeless people. Like a first come first serve type place you don't need to reserve befor hand? Prefer NW Oregon. Has to allow fires and fishing as well. Detroit lake is a no go. Lookong to camp sunday-wed this week. Thanks for the help!!

There's a place I used to go to as a kid called Coldwater Cove which was incredible, but I think you need to book 7 days in advance, sorry.

You might try Cove Creek... not sure if I went there before.

Milo McIver is really nice. The one downside is that you don't ever get the feeling that you've made the big adventure into the deep dark woods, etc, because it's a pretty simple drive from Portland. However, it's huge, very quiet, and definitely qualifies as a vacation spot.

At worst you can try zooming around google maps for a lake and then typing 'campground' :p

I got mine at Fry's Electronics in Renton but they didn't have any the last time I was there (2 wks). Might try www.rightchannelradios.com. I've bought from them before. Got my firestick, hoodmount and 18' of cable from them.

I know, I've really abused both of my antennas. The mounting threads on the radio antenna are not in very good shape but the CB antenna is unfazed. I think its the spring.
