I think I killed my LSD

So I went offroading on Sunday, on my way home I kept hearing a "woo-woo-woo-woo-woo" noise coming from the rear of the truck every time I let off the gas. As soon as I would give it gas again the noise would go away. At the time, I just ignored it since I usually get tons of noises after hitting a trail (they all normally go away after I wash the truck). After washing the truck the noise was still there. I double checked my tires, took a look under the truck and everything checked out. This morning I decided to take the truck to the dealer, they took a ride with me and noticed the noise. Right away the tech tried blaming it on my tires. "It’s probably your tires", "did the truck come with those?", "all terrain tires develop noise as they wear down"... blah blah blah. When we got back to the dealer, they put the truck on the lift and ran it, right away you could hear the noise LOUD and CLEAR coming from inside the pumpkin. The tech decided that changing the differential oil might help. About two hours later the dealer calls me informing me that they found a bunch of metal shavings in the oil. They decided to order me a new 3rd member. It should be here tomorrow. Luckily they are going to cover it under warranty !

I have a feeling I might have caused the problem . Since I don't have a locker, I do what I like to call a "poor mans locker". Whenever I lose traction on one of my rear wheels, I hit the ebreak and keep going until I gain traction again. It locks my rear tires 90% of the time. Do you guys think doing that is what probably caused the problem?

 

You've probably done the poor mans locker trick 100x more then me. I did use it heavily on Sunday though. My truck only has 9k miles on it.

did you have your rear end submerged in water for any length of time?

 

Doubt it, but have you changed the oil and forgot the LSD additive

 

Did anyone else just notice that LSD is spelled like acid, LSD HA

 

haha whats this poor mans locker guys. i dont have a locker either it might come in handy. do you just put the ebrake on the first click or the whole way down? sorry to derail this thread

Nope, no water. Drove to the trail on Sunday morning with no noise, drove home with the noise.

Never changed the diff oil, truck only has 9k miles on it.

Hahaha, you click the ebreak 1 or two clicks, just enough to stop any wheel spin and gave it has while the ebreak is engaged. This will make both wheels spin the majority of the time.

Are you talking about when they are actually putting together the differentials from the factory? Funny thing was that I entered the trail with no noise and exited the trail with it.

 

Weak sauce! I guess its time for an ARB. Originally, my plan was to keep using poor mans locker in the rear and adding an ARB in the front. The front would have only been used as a last resort. After this situation, now I'm just thinking about putting an ARB in the rear and be done with it.

 

haha ,sorry to hear but what i tell you lastnight..might be the dear diff. they couldnt just replace the clutch pack? in any case though, you're getting a new member hahahahahaha. i agree with everyone else most likely not caused by the "poor mans" locker.

i had a front and rear diff service done at 6k just for preventive maintenance and that stuff that came out was pretty bad even at that low milage, but mind you i'm out and about somewhere just about every weekend.

 

Just get the ARBs already bro! Fuck the supercharger! The Truck has enough power already! Come Tax time homie slap the ARBs on that bitch!

 

You sure you didn't drive through Oakland recently and get a whistle tip installed???
