If you loved your kids you would prepare them for the real world by making them pay for the things they want.

    Ok. That I can understand.

No argument there. Everything I have I had to earn. It took me two days to talk my Dad into co-signing for me on my first truck. The loan was only $1,500 and I had a job lined out that paid for it within 3 months.

    Good planning there.

I bought my first vehicle for $1300 COLD HARD CASH  It was a 1987 celica, which, due to a wiring issue, would not start unless you pushed down the left turn signal while turning the key

That is awsome. You have to love those wiring issues. My old truck has a short somewhere under the dash that when you hit a hard bump the whole truck goes dark. It keeps runnning; it just has no lights at all. You have to slam your fist on the dash to get them to come back on. It has that old metal dash... let me tell you about cussing up a storm when driving in the rain with no lights slamming your fist into the dash. I love that old truck. Still have her.

It sucks when you realize that and you're already 19 years old. I'm probably going to be fucked when I get out of college with only a bs in mechanical engineering because I have no work experience, except for community service. (even that's not even as stressful as work) I tried to apply to 4 different jobs this year that should have guaranteed me a job, I even followed up on all of them and never got a reply back. I try to ignore the laziness by doing volunteer work, yard work, and other things, but that still doesn't justify not having a job as much as I want it to do so..

One of my friend in high school bought an old police cruiser. He's an electrician now and was studying on the side in high school. Just for fun, he rewired a significant portion of the vehicle. For example, to turn on the dome light you had to push the window down button. And the AC fan speed switch actually turned on the headlights.

Pieced together yes, already had a complete set of trail gear greasable shackles, so just got the hanger kit, and shock hoops, need to order the motor mount eliminators.

Derek - At least your trying. I hate to break it to you, but this is a hard economy to get a good job in. That said; your going to have to keep trying. Maybe start looking for lower engineering jobs to get your foot in the door.

Don't get down man, It's a rough time to be looking for a job Derek. Especially when you are only available for the summer, with school and all. I had a hard time finding summer jobs when I was in college as well. I ended up working one summer at a grocery store, and another at a gas station before I finally got an internship summer before junior year.

Thats a good idea. You should look for a job as an assistant or tech for an engineer. Then you can learn the business.

Plus your meeting people in the industry. Knowing people and being known can be as valuable as all the training in the world.

Derek does the UT Tyler engineering school have a yearly job fair or anything similar to that?

Two of those jobs were at a Sams Club and a Walmart, can you imagine how depressing it is to not even get an interview there? The other one was an Avis car washer job, I wanted that one so damn bad. I went in after calling and the damn lady at the desk told me the job was already taken. She didn't even look up when she said it too, it was worse since I had a 20 minute drive to think about how much it sucked not getting that job. I also paid a dollar for parking

I meet engineers everyday, my dad's a vp of engineering. The house we're in is being tested on, so I ask a shit load of questions to all the engineers that pass by. I try not to annoy them too much with questions because they probably think I'm a spoiled jackass.

They only scout during senior final designs, I haven't heard of anything else..
