I've been really wanting to get into some mountain biking, but have had my time split up by deployments for the past couple years and havent really had the time. I am about to get back to the states next week and am going to start finally. I dont really want to read through 35 pages of this thread so if anyone can give me some pointers on different bike/riding styles and gear that would be cool! or just send me somewhere i can find it! Thanks fellas and I cant wait to get into a new sport!

I just go night riding around town for now to get into shape. I rode 3 miles last night at an average speed of 10 mph. It's nice having the lights and riding at night it's cool and less idiots out.

I live in Alliance, Ne so I'm only a couple hours away and a hour and half from Cabela's main headquarters I can't walk out either store with out spending at least $500. When Scheels was in the mall my dad sold a bunch of antique firearms to them. I just got into it so I don't know it all yet.

head to your local dealer and test out some bikes. your best bet to finding a bike you like is to test ride as many as you can and see how they feel and whats best for you. as far as brands go i would say trek specialized giant santa cruz and a bunch of others. idk how much your trying to spend but im sure if you gave a budget people would be able to give a better recomendation

    btw thanks for your service!

with that budget the wahoo is a great bike IMO(thats the one wizzy posted i have it as well) its a good beginner bike for someone who thinks they will keep going in the sport. Specialized has the hardrock which is a pretty good bike also. im not sure about other hardtails from other companies but i know there are other great entry-mid level bikes out there
