I think I may have a lifter or rocker arm making a little noise. It's on the passenger side and it sounds like the noise a rocker arm would make in my old chevy. Really sounds like a sewing machine. I was hoping something may be a little loose. Rick

I did a search and I think I will need a valve adjustment. Anybody got a clue on what this will cost 2001 v6 105,000 miles. Rick

The valve train is a shim under bucket. No lifters. Its very difficult to get a perfect adjustment with this design, so its common to hear a ticking noise. I assure you, its normal.

do the newer ones need valve adjustments too? Im surprised they are needed so soon on an engine that doesnt go over 6K rpm.

Ricky do you plan on doing this adjustment yourself?? I have never done an adjustment using the shims and was wondering if you were gonna do it. I have an 01 with 140,000 and bought it used with no maintenance history

The new ones have the same shim under bucket design. There is no "recomended" adjustment interval, and I havent had to adjust them. I have seen Tacoma engines with WAY over 100,000 miles on them and the valves wwere fine. I checked them on my 2000 Tacoma at 100,000 miles and they were very well in spec. Personally, I think the ticking the OP is hearing is normal, but it cant hurt to throw a feeler on the valves to check for adjustment.

Sounds like mine, What motor is this?
I think my ticking or Knocking when its real cold out I think its caused by a crack in the header, on the 2.7L motors.

my 98 with the 2.4L ticks and has for the past 118K miles.

    It is normal...

I got the truck when i worked for a Toyota dealer, and I ask the Toyota District Factory rep if thisi snormal and he said yes. he said it bites, but it is normal.
He would not say more than that.
i think Toyota was not happy with it, but knew it would cost to much to find a fix.

So i left it as it...
