Is it possible to re-powdercoat ?

As the title states , can you powdercoat over powdercoat ?

 

I would imagine not, when I picked my wheels up from the powder coater last weak he made it seem like you had to get everything off, then again he powder coated over parts that were chrome that he couldn't get off with the sandblaster so it might be possible

 

I know at work we have to burn the old stuff off and start over.

 

Yep from what I'm reading online you have to get back down to bare metal so it can get a good charge to adhere

 

I'm sure you can. My only experience is when I saw an episode of OCC and they fucked up a powdercoated frame on a bike before a show and had to have it bead-blasted and re-coated in like 24hrs. But, of course they were building a show bike. I guess it all depends on the level of possible imperfection you are willing to live with. But since you live with imperfection everyday OZ, this should be no biggie for you.

 

tey will have to media blast the other coating off. then shoot and bake again.what are you coating oz?

I know a guy who owns/operates a powdercoating business (I wired his shop). I'll ask him tomorrow if re-powdercoating with good results is possible.

Here's the story :

After about 100 years in my shop , I am going to put on my RelentlessFab aluminum bumper

I am of two minds as to whether I want to add full headlight protection bars on it or not .

If I mount it raw and run around with it till I decide , I will have to remount the OEM bumper to send this one away for coating .

If I coat it now and want to add the bars later , it will have to be hit with a grinder for the welds .

 

I would think your welder buddy would probably prefer welding it before it ever gets powder coated. Other wise he/you are going to have to grind off a large section to get a clean weld and not get super nasty toxic fumes.

But I'm no expert. You may want to consult your welder dude.

 

Yes, you can powdercoat over existing powdercoat. It just make the coating thicker and more durable. I've had one of the bumpers powdercoated prior to installing on a customers truck and the PC shop did a double coating on the bumper. It just makes the coating tougher.

 

I say wait until you are sure. It's been this long anyway... just wait and get it right the first time. Or put it on raw and slap the OEM one back on when you finally make the decision.

I think your truck would look incredible with the bumper & full bars.

OZ-they can chip away at a non-visible part of the bumper to give them a good ground. Then, if the arc is strong enough, they can re-coat it. They have to bake it a little longer, and sometimes the powder will just fall off. The shop I worked at in high school coated small parts for what they were fabricating, so if we needed to re-coat something, we would just chip off the old PC. But, like i said, these were little parts, so it wasnt that big of a job. I know you can re-coat some things, the results will not be consistant everytime though.

talked to buddy, and he says you can powdercoat over existing powdercoat. you would need to repowdercoat the whole bumper to avoid a visible seam.
