I had to chuckle a bit at the title of this thread - last time I looked the US military was established and designed to ultimately answer to civilian control. That's why there are civilian Secretaries of the Services and DoD and the Commander-in-chief is the President.

Personally, I believe that it's time to allow gays to serve openly - and eliminate what is just a distraction for all people serving in the Armed Forces. As has been stated earlier, there are a lot of things far more important to worry about than the sexual orientation of the person you're fighting alongside.

In my years of service, I dealt with far too many issues related to straight men and women who couldn't remain faithful to their spouses - nothing like trying to mediate the outcomes of an unfaithful wife or husband on a deployed spouse. I watched a deployed 2 star general's career go down the tubes because he couldn't keep it in his pants. Promiscuity isn't a gay or straight issue - it's a moral one.

I have a brother-in-law who is gay who has been with his partner for 20 years - and I can't think of a more supportive, loving and dedicated couple. We also have made friends with numerous gay couples over the years - and have seen far more straight couples break-up than gay couples.

In my mind, no matter how one tries to spin this issue, it really comes down to your moral code - or your level of bias. Unfortunately, it seems to me that most of the "moral" objections come from people who really don't have any real religeous convictions - their reaction is based in bias.

The US military has long been an organization where social experiments take place. Why? Because it is, ultimately, a strong, mature structure with a code of ethics, a sense of camaraderie and an adherance to and belief in rule and regulation...promulgated by a civilian authority. In short, we focus on what is really important - fighting alonside each other, protecting each other and not worrying about the small things.

    Just my $.02.

I have noticed that a lot of people that are FOR the repeal of DADT that have been in the military seem to have a relative or childhood friend who is gay. Which means they have a dog in the fight in my opinion.

That or somewhere along the way they learned tolerance, acceptance, and/or to just not give a damn about what someone else does behind closed doors.

Bingo! I didn't always have the opinion I have now. It took me some time to overcome the biased opinions I learned as a kid growing up when people didn't admit to being gay.

I had a harder time learning to accept that the Air Force and Navy are really armed forces!! ;)

I'm for the repeal and I don't have a childhood friend or a relative who is gay. I just don't give a shit. Why should I care what your sexual orientation is? How does it affect me? As far as I'm concerned, his/her preference to a member of the same sex means no more to me than if he/she likes poultry over beef.

That having been said, there is a caveat. While I am for gays serving openly, I am not for the push by the gay community to also allow transsexuals to serve. Sorry, but a dude is a dude and a chic is a chic. That cross-dressing shit has no place in the armed services.

After reading these posts, I guess I'm in the small minority on this one.

Civilians have been fucking with our services forever. The constant social experimentation gets a bit old. After 20 years of service, I guess I'm a little tired of this discussion. To each or her own, but frankly, I can't see how it won't be disruptive in the long run. And please don't compare the gay-integration successes of other country's militaries to ours--there is no comparison to this nation--none, as I believe in American Exceptionalism. I have worked with Brits, Canadians, Aussies, and Gemans... and a host of other military men and women from other nations--all great folks--but not the same caliber as our military.

I also have a religious and moral repulsion for homosexuality. And by "repulsion" I do not mean I refuse to be around gay people; nothing against them... just that I believe same sex coupling is in direct opposition to the Word of God. Nothing personal. You have your belief system, I have mine. My question is, where will this tolerance and acceptance stop? Like above--transsexuals? Are people who believe coupling with animals is OK? Why not? It's their belief system; shouldn't they also have the right to serve? See where I'm going with this? It's a very slippery slope--very slippery. What is abhorrent to one, is perfectly acceptable to another.

Then again my thoughts on this are rather moot ATT. My ancient "old school" butt is retiring from active service 31 Dec 2011--and it's probably my time to go.

 well, my religion says that being over 40 is abhorrent! So you disgust me... This is just as irrelevant as your belief system... so please try not to shove your God down everyone else's throats master sergeant...

Everyone deserves the right to serve their country free of harassment and fear of being discovered! Atheist, Gay, ethnic, jewish, christian, muslim, men, women, anyone capable of meeting the physical standards. If you don't agree then maybe its a good thing you are retiring... make room for open minded progressive people. thanks for your 20 years sergeant

This isn't a Christian nation. Your anti-sexuality values from being a Christian have no place in lawmaking.

Using your Religious values to strip the rights from another group of Americans is the true slippery slope, not allowing homosexuals to serve openly in the Military.

Any American Citizen who wants to risk their life serving their country should have the right to regardless of Race, Sex, Sexual Orientation or Religion.

Further, comparing homosexuality to bestiality is absurd.

Butt, Butt, Butt.......... among heterosexuals 35% of women and 40% of men have tried anal sex with the opposite sex. Yet only 3.7% of men have had anal sex with another man. Believe it or not anal sex isn't practiced by all homosexual men. If going down is a sin, than we all go to hell.

If you ask strictly combat arms MOS's you would see 90% (my stat) dont want gays, that is just how we are wired. Infantry MOS's are a mans world. We will never see eye to eye with the other side on this issue.
