Tire pressure sensor replacement

I just bought a 2011 Tacoma double cab. I have a 2001 Tacoma. I want to swap the tires and rims on them. Of course the 2011 has tire pressure sensors and the 2001 does not. How much trouble am I looking at to try to do this? The rims are the same size, but the tires are different sizes. I guess the real question is, can the sensors on the 2011 be transferred the 2001 rims and be recalibrated, or do I have to buy new sensors?

You can try to transfer them to the 2001 rims, but check to see that they fit snugly first. If they fit poorly inside the rim then the tire changing equipment will snag and break 'em.

If they don't fit they sell TPMS banding kits that let you band the sensor inside against the rim; just do a google for 'em. Tires don't matter.

They don't need calibrating except to the tire pressure you want to operate at. Instructions in the owner's manual. If you remove them and remount them (whether back on the same wheels, or the 2001 wheels) then buy a new seal, washer and nut. They sell them as kits in most tire stores.

Alternatively: just put tape over the lamp and continue as you always have.

 

I'm doubtful the 2001 rims will have apt he right angles to accept the tpms sensors. You will likely need tpms straps. That's what I am running on my rims from an 04 tundra.
