Odd tire question

I am on my way moving from Colorado Springs CO to Tampa FL. I was thinking in my truch today with the difference in atmospheric pressure would that affect the pressure in my tires. That being said the tire pressure would be higher. Does the TPMS alert you when the tire is over inflated. I am pretty sure that it makes little difference. But my tire gauge is packed (I know dumb)....thanks

 

i dont think it will come on over inflation.cause i've had a few in the shop with over 80PSI and it wasnt on......

I drove over 1000 miles in the last few days...and getting around 20 mpg...I am not even going there...that poses another question...when i get to Tampa should I have the dealer reset my ECM?

What is an ECM?

If my guess is correct, the engine control computer? or engine control management thingy?

It will adjust for the lower elevation and high humidity there.

I'm confused about the TPMS question, not to thread jack but I wanted to throw up a follow up. I understood that the TPMS registers a difference in change from the set point, meaning high or low Did I understand this incorrectly? With those tires that were at 80 PSI, it would make sense that the sensor wasn't on if it was reset for that pressure and all 4 were at that pressure (like E rated tires for example).

 

TPMS works work in either direction in respect to having more than a set amount of variance from each other, like 1 tire being more than 8 lbs higher or lower than the others. I know for a fact that the new Hyundai we just got for the wife had over 50 lbs in each tire on the ground for whatever asshat reason and the light was on when she got home. I just figured the spare was underinflated but checked the 4 on the ground and found 55 lbs in each one when the tires say 44 max and the door plate says 32 all around. So when I let out 20 lbs from each tire out, down to 33-34 on the tire gauge, the light on the dash went off. They measure a variance from one another in either direction, hi or low. Not sure why Toyota ones would be any different. Never tested overinflating 1 tire on the RAV4 when we had it but pretty sure the light would light up if 1 was way higher than the others.

I have no doubt they will indicate malfunction if overinflated beyond their max operating limit tho.

 

If you are moving from Colorado to Fl the tire pressure will go DOWN because of the higher relative pressure at the lower elevation. If you are worried you can stop by a shop to have it checked or just wait to see if you get a TPMS light. As far as resetting the ECM, No. The computer is constantly taking readings from the sensors and adjusting for all changing conditions. The computer/injection will adjust the amount of fuel for each ignition sequence to maintain a proper air to fuel ratio. The air is more dense as you go to sea level and so has more oxygen per unit volume, the computer will sense this and add more fuel. On the plus side you have more power, negative side probably less MPG. I have always gotten better MPG at high elevation.
