Just bought a '98 Tacoma SR5 3.4L 5spd, great shape and very nice, i love it, and i can't wait to get them BFG KM/2s on it next week. I'm used to Ford V8s and love them too

What does the SR5 mean, and i haven't had time to jack it up yet to see if it has positive traction yet. I went thru a long mudhole in 2wd with the really slick tires, and it came on out every time pretty easy. If its not posi, where can i buy a spool or locker, or get a posi rear axle from a wrecked one.

Welcome to TW! If you dont have a Diff Lock button on the left side of the steering wheel, then you have an open diff.

TRD offroad Tacomas come with factory electronic lockers that are pretty decant. You can go to a junk yard and try and find one i think to swap. Or there are lots of aftermarket ones your can get.

    Welcome to TW!

SR5 used to stand for Sport Rally 5speed. Now it's just the trim pkg with the bells and whistles. As the two previous guys said, no RR DIF LOCK button means open dif.

You can get a lunchbox locker for a couple hundred or so though. Selectable are more money, and ARB (best IMHO) is over a grand. It's hard to get an axle out of a wrecked Toyota because most of the older trucks have been recalled and crushed. Locker 4Runners are rarer.

Research on here what locker/lsd you want and then just go from there.

I think the OP is asking if positraction or LSD came on his truck. I don't think he is referring to a locker in his current setup. Was an LSD an option on the 1st gen Tacomas or was it either you got a switchable locker or open diff?

Posi and a locker are VERY different. You can drive on the street with posi (which is GM/domestic equipment, anyway). With a locker engaged on the street, you may very well damage some of your drivetrain. Posi still allows for *some* side to side movement (for going around corners) but a locker is 100% locked.

Do NOT buy a spool if you drive this truck at all on the street, let alone even fire roads. Spools are for dedicated rock crawlers (i.e. trailer queens). Even then, many guys still have selectible lockers in their rock rigs.

i know what posi, locker, and spool is and how it works, a locker would be nice, so u have it when u need, posi i defenately want, i do not want a spool, it is my everyday driver. i'm fixin to go outside and check on posi rear end

yeah, i just lifted it up and seen it doesn't have a posi rear end, so i guess i'm gonna have to see if i can find a TRD axle out of a wrecked one, can i just change the differential, or do i have to change the whole axle???

You will need a whole TRD rear axle. If you have the money an ARB air locker setup will be much better, the non TRD rear axle is stronger than the TRD e locker rear axle.

the "detroit locker" is detroits auto locker that churps around corners and what not, the "detroit tru trac" is a gear driven limited slip, since its gears it locks up was stronger than a clutch pack lsd, ive had one in mine for bout 10k miles and absolutly love it, cost around 550, its almost a miracle locker because its smooth as silk on the hwy but also locks up almost as solid as an auto locker on the trail, love mine, way to go in my opinion if u dont wanna spend for the arb
