Something pretty fun but sad too...

I'm looking to get another tacoma soon and I test drove a DCSB 4x4 saturday afternoon. After I get done going over ther truck the salesman and I get in to go for a spin. The salesman is in the driver seat showing me a few things when he points out the 2H-4H-4low switch and says, "This is how you adjust the RIDE HEIGHT when in 4 Wheel drive"! I asked him "Did you just say thats where i adjust the suspension height?, to make sure I understood him and he says Yes!!!!! I said hey dude, thats the settings for the Transfer case, 2 high-4 high and 4 low! He kinda looks down and just says yes.

WoW, I wonder how many people were givin incorrect info about their vehicles from this guy. Needless to say I'm not gonna buy the truck from him. Although I'm pretty sure that most Tacoma owners know more about the truck then salesman do. I work at a dealership and I'm still amazed at what dumbasses salesman can be.

Just thought I'd share.

 

I have a very good friend that is a Toyota (new cars) salesman and he has showed me their "study materials" that discuss vehicle knowledge, options, trim packages, etc. He even has to take tests on the material at his dealership (happens to be my favorite dealership). I thought it was very straightforward and not terribly difficult given the number of vehicles/models/packages Toyota offers. He stresses about it all the time, and yep, sometimes he is a bit of a dumbass about the details. He mixes them up all the time. But he's learned over the years to just admit not knowing something instead of bullshitting a buyer. He'll take time to find out the info to educate himself.

 

Now to be fair, I have met some very good salesman who were very knowledgable, and those are the ones that do very well, so i dont mean to come across like all saleman are dumbasses. I just thought this was pretty funny.

 

Maybe he thought he was selling you a Land Rover and forgot what vehicle he was sitting in

 

When I was buying a 2011 Highlander, the dumb nut job posing as sales man told me that the spare was under the vehicle when I asked where it was. The particular model he was showing me had run flats. I told him there is no spare under it and I bet him coke. He insisted that it was under there. I told him to show it to me or go into the office and find out that the model we were looking at had run flats. He went it, then came back and told me I was right.

I gave him the look like I was telling him he was a dumb ass and left him and asked for another salesman.

 

I wouldn't be so sure owners... or potential owners... are so much more knowledgeable. After all, he got as far as he has until you pointed out his mistake.

Most people I talk to about Tacoma's part time 4x4 don't even know there's a difference from full time 4x4, much less how it affects how you use it.

I don't even bother letting a salesman try to introduce a vehicle to me. Even the briefing they give before a test drive at reveal is mostly tuned out. They just do it for liability anyway. I know what I want and look for it myself, or ask specifically for it.

 

Agreed. The salesmen's run down of the little features is about the only thing I pay attention to (storage compartments, audio features and settings and any other electronics that are new and exciting).

 

It was pretty funny, when he moved the switch to 4 low he says, "this is how you lower the vehicle'. I guess he didnt notice that the truck wasnt going down.

 

I'm going to drive into work in lowrider mode today and see if my fuel mileage is any better because of lowered wind resistance.

 

i have worked in the auto for the better part of my life and i can say i would never listen to anything a salesman tells you about a car or truck. they are almost always retarded this is an unfortunate truth of buying most anything in a dealership.. and this applies to warranties accessories hell literally anything.

The sales woman I bought my Tacoma from, it was her second week on the job. She was up front saying that she didn't know everything and she would find out any questions she could not answer. I gave her the benefit of the doubt, but thank god I knew what I was buying and did the proper research. I just needed her to get me a fair price and put the paper work through. Which she did.

 

That's why he's a car salesman and not a sales carman.

 

Reminds me of when I was lookin at Tacomas. I asked the salesman what this button did.

He told me it was a boost to the air conditioning.

 

Now thats funny shit!

 

I can understand some mix-ups, especially on a big lot that carries many brands, but something like a 4x4 switch is fairly universal. There's no excuse in this case.

 

Find a dealer with a lot of Tacos and Tundras on the lot. Typically such salesmen sell more trucks and are more knowledgeable about 4WD modes, towing/payload capacities, etc. More trucks on the lot also means they are more likely to deal.
