It seems like most beaches in the South are closed to 4x4s, not sure about the West Coast or Great Lakes. I used to go all the time back home in MA and miss it. Where does everyone get beach access? How much are your permits?

OBX (Outer Banks) in North Carolina. We go every year in the first week of June (This year it's June 14-20 because of the kids' school year)

We usually go in april (to fish), June, (swiming) and once again in late August / Early Sept.

It's pretty much free in most places, there's some locations where it's $25 (Kitty Hawk, some Nags Head spots) -

Head to the Hatteras Sea Shore and just drive onto the beach where you see the little brown ORV signs.

    Here's a link:

    http://www.outer-banks.com/visitor-info/offroad.asp

It's a popular vacation spot with lots to do, and you can rent some pretty cool houses. There's houses up in the north end (Corolla) that are out in the dunes and you can only get there with a 4x4...

    Happy Wheeling!

I totally agree! Went last year in April. It was COLD & rainy most of the week and we got lucky on Friday. There's a nice stretch of beach to drive - we went from Corolla northward to the VA border (and its fenced off there).
Here's a shot where we stopped at the VA border (brother-in-law and his Xterra).

The houses (and rental houses) are unbelievable and the area is sooooo nice, quiet & peacful. Highly recommend for a vacation!! I wanna go back soon!

No permit needed - atleast, not last year when we were there.

In MA you can go to Duxbury Beach, Long Beach in Plymouth, Old Silver in Sandwich, and a lot more down on the Cape. I wish I didn't have to drive all the way to NC to enjoy tailgating.

A lot of the beaches in St. Johns County (where I'm at) are open to drive on. Hell, I've been driving on the beach everytime I went for the last three years. Season passes I think (last all year) are like $25 before Memorial Day and $40 after memorial day.
