Mobil1 0W 10 Motor Oil... who uses it??

so who has tried this low weight oil? touted by Mobil 1 as a gas savings option.... have done a bit of research and it is a factory standard weight for a lot of the new hybrids out. sounds like it is catching on for other vehicles and haven't really seen any claims of excessive wear on the motor, metals in the oil during a change...etc.

has anyone tried this? any opinions?

 

I have ran 10w-30for the entire time I have owned this truck, and the PO used the same. I have a pretty good idea if I changed it, the motor would die just to spite me.

Kind of like the used, I mean RE-used oil. No thanks. I like my oil and will probably run it till I die, or it becomes discontinued.

 

There are MANY opinions on oil to use--Ran my 91 w/havoiline 10-40.
Engine (inside )looked like NEW. just sold it--ran like new. REALLY!!
Started using 5-30 synthetic in my 2003--Costs more-lasts longer.
SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER..
No noticable difference so far.

The low weight stuff may be fine for newer vehicles with tighter engine tolerances, but I wouldn't start running it in an older motor with 60k or more miles on it.

 

My wife's Honda Accord uses 0w 20 according to the dealer. Haven't read the manual on this since they gave us the first oil change free. Just had it changed a couple weeks ago and asked what they put in. That is what they told me and also told me that most people bring their vehicles in to them since it is so hard to find. Haven't looked for it myself but do usually do my own changes.

 

thats really my only concern.... switching the oil in a motor that has been getting 5w 30 for the last 140xxx miles.

 

Be careful with the synthetic in old reg oil motors. The pros told me it would kill the engine, I laughed. I've built multiple engines in my time. I then "treated" my 4.0 ltr, 200,000 mi. Ranger to a nice synthetic change. It "killed" it. The clean synthetic cleaned out the hard deposits that was keeping it from leaking. Rear main and pan leaks. The machined(rod) clearances also cleaned out so a bad knock developed. So to Craigslist it went.

 

it appears the synthetic treatment actually helped you out. the things it uncovered were going to happen at some point anyway. ...you just got an early warning and were able to get rid of it before it cost you anything.
