I can see the point of view saying the someone from the company may get hired else where...

Here's a little insight: Family owned, family run, with family working for family. 55 employees across a few states. Over time is via hand written check. I have to use my personal cell phone to check in, clock in, make any calls to to the office or supervisor and personal computer to write reports after hours without pay. I have prior security experience, their policy book states those with prior experience may be paid accordingly. I'm getting paid what a high school kid with no experience gets after 60 days. They really don't have an HR rep, the owner is the main supervisor and hiring manager.

I know most if not all employers want to talk to the previous employer and I can understand that, but I feel that leaving for the reasons I have is not the wrong thing to do.

My interview with the other company is at 5:30 tonight and I will be asking about the 2 weeks, I had not thought of that, thank you Tabe.

I did not get a letter with any of that information. And the company does not offer benefits of any kind.

Definitely be tactful. My brother started at a small police dept. at 19, and decided to leave for a bigger, better dept. The small one made him firearms instructor, and offered him his choice between K9 or detective if he'd stay. He delcined and took the other job. At his exit interview he told the new chief exactly how he felt about some things that he didnt agree with there, and basically that no assignment in the world would keep him there.

He left the chief's office, and on his way out, stopped in the briefing room and talked to some of the guys going on shift. The chief saw him, walked into the room and trespassed him. Now if he sets foot in the building, he goes to jail

yeah, some people don't react well to you leaving them for something bigger/better. So just make sure you thank them for the opportunity and all that bullshit, so that they don't get pissed at you.

Well, is it possible to leave and just not list them as a past employer on your resume? I mean, you've been there 3 weeks.

If you feel that one of the reasons for leaving is the lack of professionalism, than leaving without notice would make you just as bad as them. It's hard to set a standard that you expect others to live up to if you can't do it yourself. Do everything right and above board and they can never say a bad word about you.

The interview with the other company went very well from my point of view. Pay range is 14 at the lowest to over 30 at the highest...plus cash tips. They are a very well known and reputable company with a return client base and have numerous high end big name clients. Everything is above board and I have a number of close friends that work with them, that I know for a fact if something was up with them they wouldn't work there. They will be calling me back in a few days and if I get an offer I will accept. They are willing to let me be above board and give and work the two weeks.

I will list them as a previous employer just as an honesty thing and I will be honest when I get asked about why the term was so short. I feel comfortable with my choice and I'm gonna stick to it. The position I interviewed for seems to be a lot better fit, with more of a career opportunity should the LE thing not pan out in decent time.

Go in and talk with your supervisor. Explain to them it just isn't working out and that you don't want to waste any more of their time. Thank them for the opportunity. Do not bad mouth them or lambast their business practices. Most likely they will let you go with out issue.

Received a phone call from the owner of the company i interviewed with. They are offering me a job. Paperwork is Saturday, training starts as early as Monday. I have to get an airport access card, finger prints, CO DOT physical and a few suits.

My resignation letter goes as follows:

    Dear Mr. W.:
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your company. My experiences at ______________________________ have been enjoyable; however my expectation of this job has not been met and I do not feel we are the best fit for each other. Please accept this letter of resignation effective immediately. My last day of employment will be Thursday August 12, 2011.

    Acceptable?

Notice is always nice, but don't give notice until you're ready to leave. You may be asked to clean out your desk immediately.

I'm ready right now. And I don't have a desk!! Yay! Just have to return my take home equipment and uniforms and be done. I think notice is the best idea, and since I have the offer currently open as of 5 min ago, notice seems to be in order tomorrow.

Figure of speech. But it's a good idea to leave on the best terms you can, whether you liked the employer or not. The more references, the better, if they're positive.

Remove this part or re-word it. As shitty as a job it may have been, they gave you a job.

I'd leave that part out altogether. Generally speaking, when leaving a position it's best to focus on reasons other than how you feel about the job, even if that is the primary reason.

Dropped off the notice on Monday. It went very well, a lot better then expected. The owner told me that if I ever needed to use them as a reference, he would be happy to be one. He wants me to work through next Friday, as there is an event that they hand pick officers for and he wants me there based on my current performance, reputation and work ethic.
