Ride Quality of 22s

I'm pretty firm on putting a set of 22s with 285/35s on my Prerunner but I've read a lot of negative but not very specific comments on numerous other threads about the ride quality. Can someone give some detailed comments on the ride quality. Too stiff, noisy, etc... I'm also interested in the positive ones since I've seen a lot trucks with 22s on this site.

big rims might look good but ride shitty i would go with 20's to keep some rubber in the ground

 

go with 285/50. i had those are my truck and are still for sale including the wheels

 

22's are fine as longs as you get the right width and tire size for your tacoma. I have a single cab 2005 tacoma and its stock height. I have 22x7.5 rims on it. the tire i have is the 2453522. The truck rides very well. But you will notice a diffrence in acceleration. Your truck should be fines as long as you go with a 22x8.5 or 22x.9. the tire size you should go depends on ur truck height and width of ur wheel. your local tire shop should be able to tell you. Just make sure you get your wheels balanced and take that bad boy for alignment also. You should be set.

 

I'm glad somebody had a positive experience with 22s. I've really been looking more at 20s lately and the price difference is now starting to play into it and the 20s are much cheaper. I'd still love to put a set of 22s on but I think for the price and the ride 20s will likely be the choice. I'll probably buy them in February.

 

If you google "tires" there is a tire calculator on one of the pages which could assist you in your purchase, it figures your speedometer at sixty mph, shows how far off you would be, could help you with "Johnny Law".

hah u guys got nothing on me ...255/35/20's and i dont think its that bad ...just get a nice size sidewall and u should be fine with 22's

 

Morcheez, thanks for posting your black Xrunner has a very similar wheel to the one I've been considering. Black with machined lip. Any regrets with the choice? Would you buy the same wheel again? I'm also glad you don't think the ride is that bad. I think I have to suck it up and go 22s, if everything goes right I'll have these wheels for a long time.

 

I have a feeling that the ride on an X with 22's compared to a PreRunner with 22's will be vastly different because of the suspension characteristics of each truck, but that's just a guess...

 

It all has to do with the side wall of the tire. If you running a 275 width tire and a 30 aspect ratio side wall your ride will stink if you run a 50% aspect ratio side wall the ride will be just likt stock.

60 means you side wall is 60% of your width

true but i would also thing an xrunner that has been lowered like mine would ride alot worse with the tiny tires i have...and it doesnt bother me a bit ..and it should be better for him ...at least i think

I saw a couple of Tacos with 22s and they look awesome. Though I have to think that the ride must really suck. I have had many ricers (Miata, Civic EK, Accord, Civic CRX) with 40 series tires and so I am planning on getting some Tundra Deep Six 20s with 33" 275/60/20 tires. Still looks good and rides like stock.

 

I agree the narrower the sidewall the worse the ride. I have 265/50/20's and the ride is pretty good. When I was looking at tires, I thought of going with a 45. But all the tire places said the ride will be rougher if I go smaller sidewall, Less flex to help absorb bumps.

 

I had 20's on my truck and hated it. I was also running a 35 profile tire and had to go slow over every bump. Twice I hit a pot hole and it dented my rim and let all the air out of the tire. I then had to send out the rim to be straightened. I wouldn't recommend bigger rims on a truck, defeats the point in having a truck if you know what I mean.
