Tacoma vs Tundra MPG (real world)

I was on a recent trip where we drove my Tacoma and a Tundra round trip from NH to Labrador City, NL. The total distance driven was about 2000 mi round trip and included highway, two lane roads and about 600 miles of hard pack dirt road in 4wd. Both trucks are similarly equipped (A/T, air, bed cover) and had about the same load in each.

Since we pooled gas for dividing between all travelling I got a chance to compare the two. Based on total gas costs, the cost for my Tacoma was 18% lower than the Tundra. This was signifigant as gas ranged from a low of $ 5/gallon to over $ 6/gallon in Canada.

 

Do you know what the actual MPG was? 18% is significant .. I would have expected closer to 10-15.

If we assume 20 for the Tacoma, then 18% less is 16.4 for the Tundra. 18 for the Tacoma and the Tundra turns into 14.76.

 

I have an 11 DC offroad short bed Tacoma with about 5k miles. My buddy has an '09 Tundra with a v8 and about 35k miles. I don't know the exact model, but it seems to have an upgraded comfort package. Both are automatics. The MPG in my Tacoma was just under 21 (which includes the conversion from kilos/liter to mpg) which means the Tundra was just over 17.

I don't want to get into a rock fight over this, but just thought it would be an interesting comparison based on the exact same travel for the two vehicles.

 

yea I have had both, i have lifted both and they both get crapy mielage my tacoma gets about 15-16 now and my tundra got from 10 -12 both bad ass trucks and one day if i need 400 hp ill get another tundra...

Was the tundra the 4.7 or bigger V8?
My 1GEN tundra 4.7 V8 AC got pretty comparable mpgs to my DC 4x4 Taco.
Just curious if that mileage for the tundra was with the bigger V8 engine.

 

It is apples and oranges, full size vs mid size, V6 vs V8. The OP is just pointing out a real world comparision he did from a neutral perspective.

 

A buddies 4x4 tundra 5.7 gets about 15.

My 4.0 4x4 taco gets any where from 16-24 depending on how I drive

 

I'm curious which V8 model his buddy has. That makes a big difference because the 5.7 comes with a whole different tranny. (6spd auto vs 5spd auto in the other V8)

I still have my Tundra and recently bought a Taco. I really want to lift the Tacoma and add 33s but I don't want to deal with crappy gas mileage.

 

yes the new 4.6 is an attractive option for sure.
I know a friend who had a tundra w/ a 4.0 right before it was dropped in 2005. It also was the only way you could get a manual trans.
Got me thinking of that 4.6 now......

 

wow, I didn't know it came back available on the newer Gens.
Definitely have heard good on the 4.6, I would not mind having that setup.
My 2004 Tundra w/ the 4.7 did pretty good mpg for a small V8 but I like the tacoma's ergos so much better.
Is your Mom's 4WD?

 

yeah i want to know what engine the tundra has. dad has a 1st gen 4.7 V8 extended cab 4wd.
