My thoughts. I used a shop vac and put the nozzle to the filter and could hear the motor bog down.

Blowing into it with compressed air isnt a good test. Test the volume of the air going thru it in relation to the volume of air going thru the intake tube. The Charcoal filter will support MUCH more flow than the intake tube will allow.

^I have to disagree. If the air won't go through with 90psi even in a small test area, it will impede the air entering as a whole. There has to be a reason this thing now jumps off the line unlike the sluggishness it used to have. So, we'll just agree to disagree. ;)

Well, I had it tested on a bench after I removed it, and it flowed over 500 cfm before drawing a vaccume. Me thinks my test was a bit more accurate. BUT, We can agree to disagree. :proposetoast:

Many years ago I did a lot of dyno testing on my 4Runner and came up with some simple free mods you can do to the airbox for more power.

You can check out what I did here www.GadgetOnline.com

When I got my XRunner the first thing to go to the dyno and test some mods to the stock airfilter box to find those free power gains.

Well, long story short, nothing works with the stock airfilter box, NOTHING.

I dynoed it with the big tube off, no change.

I dynoed it with the lid off of the aif fitler box, no change.

I dynoed it with carbon trap out, no change.

I dynote with the lid off the carbon trap out, and the filter out so nothing but the airbox shell left. Maybe .5 HP gain, but basically NOTHING.

Note: Whatever you do, do not remove that small metal screan at the entrance to the MAF tube inside of the airfilter box. That is a flow staightner and if you do so it will cause a lot of turbulence over the MAF and cause all kinds of performance and driveability problems.

So, it was clear that the overall design of the airbox is limiting power and flow. So I started looking to develope something that actually increased power and performance. This effort led to the development of the URD TCAI (True Cold Air Intake). That actually works and sounds wonderful.
