Solution to the exhaust tick ?

Im not talking about the injector/valve train noise, Toyota's have always had that and it does not bother me.

The noise I have is when the engine is under load, between 1600-2200rpm. The fluttering sound that resembles an exhaust leak, the truck is well over its power train warranty and never had the TSB manifolds done.

Would going to aftermarket headers fix this problem for good? I would be leaving the rest of the exhaust stock.

 

Hmm, that's odd.

My exhaust "ticks" too, odd sound, but not under load. Only when idling.. time to look up this TSB.

I have the same thing on mine, I have an aftermarket Cat-back system... I always just figured that was the cause

 

my parents sequoia does that. aftspection closer inspection, it turns out it's a crasked exhause manifold.

 

Going to inspect them closely. I think you are the only person who actually read my post.

 

This is exactly the problem I have. It's only when accelerating right? Same RPM range too. It's pretty annoying. I found that filling it with premium will mask the problem but not get rid of it.
My problem only started about 4 weeks ago. I spent all of last week trying to figure out where it's coming from.

I have the same problem... the dealership says its due to the exhaust manifold. They say that it is due to the thinness of the exhaust manifolds. Apparently Toyota did this to save on weight... I think it was to save on cost. just my opinion.
I heard that there is a tsb but it is for earlier years like 2005-2006... not 100% sure though.
It is pretty annoying... you step on the gas a bit, and it sounds like a sewing machine.

If it is indeed a cracked exhaust manifold, I would get headers as a replacement. sorry to hear about the problem, GL though and definitely a good excuse to get a performance upgrade

 

Well, I took off the exhaust manifolds for inspection. I didn't find any cracks in them, not even hairline cracks. I replaced the gaskets with new ones just in case.
I then took apart the intake and replaced the 3 gaskets that are there. There didn't appear to be anything wrong there either.
Does anyone else have any suggestions that I can check on?
I have heard about valve adjustments on Tacoma's. In fact I have an Alldata manual that gives instructions on how to do it. Could it be that maybe I have a stuck valve that flutters during certain conditions?

 

I have the exact same problem as OP and others have described. Its so damn frustrating! Replaced plugs with oem toyota ones and use 93 octane. Its worse with lower octanes. It sounds like some terrible clattering. Im very happy to see that im not the only one to have and notice this issue. Also, its a lot worse with the A/C on. Anyone else?

Same here... I thought it was spark knock, and running 91 octane *seemed* to help but i can still hear it, slightly quieter, right about 2000rpm under light acceleration. I noticed it first at about 37,000 miles (immediately after bumper-to-bumper warranty, although I could probably get it checked under powertrain warranty) and the most recent change I'd made was new plugs. I've since swapped those out for OEM and it made no difference. No CELs or loss of power, just a light clattering.

Sewing machine... that's a really good description, like one of the big, serious sewing machines running through a length of stitching, but just the clatter part from the machine body and not the thumping of the foot and bobbin.

 

Here is something that may or may not help you. I noticed that my bed was lower on the passenger side than on the driver side. I took it to a professional frame shop to have looked at. The owner told me that it's a common problem for trucks to have this and is most likely caused when the truck is getting transported on a carrier. He said they strap them down so tight that it twists the frame during transport. He said he sees this all the time and it's easily corrected. He has an agreement with a new truck dealership(Dodge I think) and said that last summer he had to correct around 60 brand new trucks.
Anyway long story short. It cost me $125 to correct my frame and after that my knocking went away. I had also developed axle wrap in the summer and that went away as well.
I'm thinking that since the frame was twisted it may have put the engine in some kind of strain thus causing it to work incorrectly. Same for the axle.

 

Glad you got your stuff fixed but I would not have believed him at all.
