Over-sized oil filter!

    Does it really matter if you run the over-sized oil filter or not. Ive been running the Mobil1 m1-102 for a while and no problems. Just noticed that Toyota runs the over-sized one and wondering why. Autozone's computers have the 4.0 V6 05-till calling for the M1-102. Any idea?

    Do you add a little extra oil or just the 5.5 qts?

    It may provide added protection and you may be able to go on a longer filter change interval...I really don't know.

    I say just stick with the Mobil 1 filter, those are VERY good filters. The K&N is nothing but the nut on top for easy take off, it's the same exact filter inside as the Mobil 1, and made by the same company.

    Wix, toyota, purolator are also very good.

    I don't think 5,000 miles is long enough to make much of a difference in oil filter size. But mobile 1 is quality.

    I guess no harm in running the smaller filter.

    The idea with the larger filters is that they take longer to clog. If the material clogs the filter has a bypass in it which will let the oil through the filter without filtering it.

    When I'm out of warranty and start extending the drain intervals based on oil analyses, I'll probably run the larger filter. It makes sense, if I'm running 10,000 or 12,000 mile intervals, might as well have larger media surface area and volume available for filtering.

    That's precisely why I run the larger M1 oil filter. My recent Blackstone Labs oil analysis revealed that at 8K miles my oil was doing great. I'll be running this current oil to 10K miles. I feel more comfortable having the larger filtering surface.

    I dont go more than 4000 miles, period. I think that spending 60 bucks every 3 months is worth it and dont need to run the oil that long

    Get the M1-209. Thats the one I run. Bigger is always better, probably not necessary, but I just want it in case I run late on oil changes, like right now :) I usually go for 6k oil changes on synthetic. Anything after that and you can feel it in performance.
