Ok. So i'm starting to get my ducks in a row and get everything down on paper. I am still doing research on whether I need a 2.7 4x4 auto tranny or just the 2.7 auto tcase and shafts.
The goal is to go ahead and get the front and rear together with the rock assault housings with 5" of lift which I think will be perfect for 35" tires.
I can get it all back together and still drive it until I finish hunting parts for the 4x4 conversion. I have a t case with 42000 miles (2.7 auto and front/rear shafts) so now it's down to the tranny and steering.
Also I may go with the rear disc brake conversion.

Thoughts are appreciated as to what i'm leaving out.

Looks like i'm up in the $6500 range so far and thats with the disc brake conversion and without the tranny/tcase/shafts.

The goal is to build a crawler with some street duty.
Also for a bit of power I am also considering the 2.7 sc from lc engineering. Tack on another 5k.

Let me know what you guys think.

seems kind of spendy to me..but i guess that is beacuse you are buying the trail gear kit..me and my buddy have priced it out for me and its gonna be about 5k...but thats with keeping the same rear axle and also doing a power steering kit by using an old toyota pickup steering box. and i also got a wicked good deal on a waggy axle already rebuilt. you gonna run stabilizer bars?

Not sure about the bars so far. Just trying to get some ideas as to what i'm forgetting. I wont do the ps upgrade until after I go to 35's.

get the skys offroad mfg kit, takes a while to come in but has most everything you need.if you are going to do a dana 44 swap i really dont think youd need chromolly shafts in the rear unless you get to the point where you start breaking stuff, but i would reccomend chromoly for the front, also just getting a diff cover for the rear will help cut cost.

for the 4x4 swap id get a 4x4 trans, its more expensive to change the output shafts and the tailhousing than it is to sell your trans and get a 4x4 one

also im not sure but is a toyota front wide enough for our trucks?

The front kit already comes with an assembled 3rd with the rock assault housing and arb. My choice of gears.
As far as the rear, I am just trying to eliminate weak areas so gonna go ahead and upgrade with chromoly.
I looked at sky's stuff and frankly wasn't to impressed with it.
For the money (although costs a little more) I think trail gear has a better setup. jmo.

Also I believe the front housing is there true tacoma width axle. 61 3/4.

just make sure the front is wide enough, other than that it seems rock solid, also birfields are the weakspot on the toyota axles...just saying because older trucks tend to be alot smaller than newer ones and i dont want you to hafta run spacers in the front.

get the 4x4 trans and t-case, you will need a custom long spline front d-shaft after the SAS

I did my SAS on a low budget, so my build has been slow, but as i find a weak spot ive been upgrading.

Also I wont be recouping much money from my parts other than the rear housing, assembled 3rd with powertrax no-slip, toytec 3 inch kit and a few other odds and ends.

edit: There birfs are the dirty 30 spline.

birf/toyota axles are awesome, the birf is just there failure prone spot, hence why they have such a market for beefed up birfs.

look on for alot more info on SAS's and toyota axles ect, although it isnt tacoworld the have a much bigger selection of info on SAS's and older toyotas

First of all... Read my stick post at the top of this forumy

It seems to me you don't even have 4wd. Why are you SASing this? You don't even know how well the IFS works since you are unable to wheel it. It seems to me you shouldn't be jumping the gun and just throwing down a ton of money so you can go wheeling while driving on the road as a DD. Ifs drives on the road 5x better than 90% of the SAS out there. Steering is so complicated to master to a perfection and it can get sketchy. The IFS can wheel just as hard as a SAS, just may not be as efficient.

The kit you are looking at already comes with the power steering adaption that is needed for the steering box. You do not need another one.

Why do you want to replace the rear axle with a rock assault one? The rear tacoma axle is plenty strong to run up to 39's by some people. The axle you have now will be absolutely fine with 35's. Also chromolly shafts are unneeded until you actually twist them and break them, which have an extremely low chance of even happening on 35's.

Yea. The fact that my truck is a pre runner is pretty obvious.
Did you just skip over the part where it says where I am looking for a 2.7 4x4 auto trans and xfer case?

I chose the rock assault rear and the chromos because I am working with a budget and they fit into that. And if I decide to not sell the rear, then I have a spare and a complete 3rd. And at $269, that's pretty cheap insurance and piece of mind in my book.

Thx for the power steering tip. noted. And I have looked over your sticky numerous times.

The plan for the build is to have an 80/20 rig and as time and money allow will be going to 100% off road.

Again "READ". Absolutely "NOTHING" is set in stone and "NOTHING" has been purchased. Talking with a tech at trail gear this week to go over my options. If they can't provide me with the options that I need then I will look at other options.

Its sure a looooooong way off for me, but my plans for axles are a 60 front 14 bolt rear. I like this combination because it will be really easy to find parts for, and it will be strong. I will compile all the other stuff separately over a long period of time. This is just how im thinking about doing it, but your plans sound good to.
