thats good..thats what you should go for..knifes are a lot like guns. i think the owner/user needs to be comfortable and confident when using the knife. brand and looks dont always matter

Got some new gear! My first pair of real hiking boots, a Marmot Aspen 2p tent, and a cheap hammock. :D

Weren't we supposed to start a support group for camping gear hoarders?

I have developed a program. Step 1 is admitting you have a problem. Step 2 is sending me your gear. :p

I would be a gear hoarder if it didn't cost so much. I've used the boots several times, but I haven't gotten to test the goretex yet. They're not quite as comfortable as my asics but not bad. I might could've gone with half a size smaller, but most stores don't carry 7.5. All I can say about the tent is that it definitely needs a footprint...which I haven't been able to find. Otherwise it seams nice. I'll write more after some use. Maybe I'll pick a crappy weekend to test out the waterproofness of everything :)

I just take heavy duty plastic (come in rolls at the hardware store) and cut out the size I need and use that as my footprint. works just as well as a manufactured one and weighs less.

I think I've hiked them both but it's been over ten years since. I'm not completely sure I've hiked Balsam Mountain trail but it rings a bell. Mt. Sterling on the other hand I'm almost 100% certain I've hiked that. Camped at Mt. Sterling on two different trips. On the first trip we hiked to Mt. Sterling in the winter. Good trail and decent campsite but can be very cold and windy in the fall. The second trip was in the summer and we hiked up to Mt. Sterling on a trail that starts at a nearby road. Don't really remember the name of it, but we took a shuttle to the trailhead and it was a couple miles or so up to the top. That was a pretty steep trail to start out on but it gets you acclimated quick. There is (or was) an old fire tower at the summit. We climbed it in the fall and had a good view. Overall I'd recommend hiking it. Sorry I can't provide any other specifics. BTW I think it is the highest tent camping site in the smokies.

    x2

I suck at trying to sharpen knives by hand. I can't ever seem to keep the angle consistent. I got one of the lansky kits a few years ago and it is like night and day. It's amazing how quickly you can put a good edge on your knives.

I know there have been TW meets at Uwharrie but has anyone done any camping/biking/fishing there? Been thinking about going there in the fall to camp for a few days. Just curious if anyone can recommend any mild/medium bike trails. Not into any serious downhill or technical stuff. Just want to camp for a few days, fish/kayak a little, and take a ride through the woods.

    Thanks anyways man.

Yep drop cloth plastic. Don't get the really thin stuff. You want it to hold up to rocks and sticks.
