Sub goes out at a loud volume

I have a 10" Kicker Comp VR on a Sony EXM 702 (roughly 250 watts). And at a loud volume the sub just turns off. My amp lights is still on, the head unit stays on, and the speakers stay on. Can anyone help me? Bigger speaker wire? I have 8-gauge for the positive and ground, RCA's on opposite side of the truck.. i have no clue help me!

 

could it be getting too hot?

 

If it was hot you would Def be able to smell it.

 

Most of the time i just smell the paint, insulation, wood etc. because i just recently made the box. But every now and then i get an irregular stench and i was thinking it was the subwoofer for awhile. But when it shuts off i dont smell it

 

The amp just might be cutting out at too high of wattage. I had an Alpine do the same thing. It was fine up to about half volume, but once I would go any higher than that, it would just stop playing although it still had power.

 

Replace the amp. It is dying a slow death.

 

Had the same thing happen to my system few years back. The amp was getting hot and shutting itself off it was a safety feature to keep from burning it up and once it cooled down it was fine and it always happened while playing music loud. And it didn't have a burning smell. The amp was an alpine v12

Figures...My amp was a gift from a friend who went through sound systems in his civic like crazy hahaha. Its just a mono-channel Sony so real quick, what's a decent cheap amp? I'm just running one 10" kicker, possibly 2 in the future. Kicker? Rockford?

 

I haven't had to buy an amp in a long time, my current JBL has been rocking for years with reliable service. Check out the JBL CS300.1

This may simply be an issue with wiring, and the amp is fine.

What is the model of the sub? Not just kicker comp VR, but the model number, or the voice coil impedance.

Also, is the amp a mono or 2 channel? The model number, 702, sounds like it is a 70wx2 amp, that bridged will do about 250w (into a 4 ohm load)

If this is the case, and you have the sub wired up to 2 ohms, then the amp is overheating or going into protect mode.

Need more info before one can pronounce the gear bad.

 

thats just it; i cant find ANY information on the amp! its a mono-channel, and ive been switching between parallel and bridged for different sounds but either way it still shuts off. The kicker is a Kicker Comp VR -

Could be a bunch of different things. You may have the wiring on your sub set up to produce a load your amplifier can't handle.

Could also be a few different reasons your amp is throwing itself into protect mode. Unreliable drops in amps, bad ground, overheating.

Double check you've got your sub wired to the correct ohm load for your amplifier. Then double check your gain to make sure it's set correctly.

After that, keep a watch on your amplifier while you test the volume out. if it's not fixed with that, double check your ground connection and your connections to the battery/fuses. Retest.

If it's still not fixed, it could be a heat issue or it could just be dying.

 

I've already re-wired and set a new ground in hopes of fixing it. All it did was just help my fuse blowing problem. i've got a mono-channel amp with 8-gauge wire. The sub as 2 positives and 2 negatives on the back. Can somebody PLEASE tell me the correct way to wire this?

 

Were you blowing the inline fuse near the positive lead to the battery?

If so, most definitely a bad ground which could easily be responsible for the entire thing.

Look at the diagram posted on how to wire your sub down to the correct load.

I'll see if I can find something about the amp.

 

x2. Get a better amp that can support that sub and don't max out the gain on your next one so you don't exercise the protection circuit so easily.

I haven't found a user manual yet, but in the time I've scavenged through google, it seems like it's not 2 ohm stable in a bridged setup. Assuming that link is the direct one you bought (a DVC 2 ohm sub), you'll want to wire it up like this:

 

Thanks everyone: I'll go ahead and try to wire it up like this (i have it as the first picture posted) and if all else fails.. its time to start shopping! I know its not the ground, not the positive, and not the sub because we tested it out on my friends multi-chanel amp.
