2011 Tacoma Double Cab: 4 or 6 Cylinders?

I am looking to get a 11 Tacoma Double Cab in the next few months. I currently drive a 96 Ford Ranger XLT, V6 4.0L extended cab. Question is, will I feel like I bought a beautiful new truck with a glorified golf cart engine since I've been driving around with a V6 for awhile?

I like the lower price and better gas mileage of the 4. I don't have anything to tow and am upgrading because I need something more kid friendly than my Ranger. I plan to keep this truck for 10+ years so I don't want to have any regrets.

Get the 6 IMO. I know my brother bought a 4 cylinder jeep new with the same intentions as you but now only 2 years later he hates it and wants to get a 6 because of no power.

whats the difference in price? It can't be that much more to upgrade to the 6
The 4 and 6 get the same gas mileage in real world driving. At least my 4cyl got the same mpg as my 6cyl i have now.

Price difference is about 2k looking at base 4 vs prerunner 6.

I'd get at least the PreRunner V6.

More power, and the truck is higher off the ground. Like small trips to the park with the kiddo that may just be only a dirt road which a 2WD PreRunner would do just fine. You're in a more northern part of texas so flooding/hurricanes probably doesn't concern yall, but yeah when it floods a little it'd be nice to get around (if i have to) with out having to worry about hydrolocking my engine. City gas mileage will probably be the same anyways, constantly stopping and going.

 

Higher ground clearance is always a good thing. What are the differences of the PreRunner vs regular?

Well it may not always be everything, but I'd rather be a little higher up in a crash with a smaller car too.

PreRunner = Well it's a "lift" from the factory, it just sits higher than the base model.

I think some of the 4WD TRD Off-Road models even cary the PreRunner badge.

^ It's new for 2011. For the record, a double cab Prerunner weighs less than an access cab 4x4, so it is feasible.

Prerunner = 4x2 but with 4x4's suspension and ride height.
Is your Ranger a 4x2? A double cab Prerunner weighs almost 300 lb more than your Ranger. You probably wouldn't want a less powerful engine than what you have now.

I agree. The 4banger would have a short life stomping on it everyday to make it move

 

Get the 6. You won't be happy going from a V6 to a 4. And since you are keeping it 10+ years, you may not tow now but may in the future.


This is my 3rd V6 Tacoma. I had a 2003, 2005, & now a 2011. Best vehicle I have ever owned. I did have a Ford Ranger 4.0 back in the early 90's. The Toyota is a better vehicle overall. My Ranger was in the shop many times after the warranty expired. My 2005 tacoma I just traded for the 2011, it had 173554 miles.

 

I too am on Tacoma #3 (2001, 2005, 2010) the first two had over 100,000 miles in less than 5 years... amazing vehicle. My 2010 is the best yet! All 3 were V-6 as they all were 4WD OFF ROAD TRD TACOMAS.

PS 'PreRunner' is a 2WD Tacoma.

 

Ah okay, I could swear I've seen TRD Off-Road trucks with the PreRunner badging on the tailgate...probably were 2WD models then.
