not sure if anybody has done this yet. i'm fairly new to TW and been browsing alot lately. love this site. its my new addiction. hahaha. :D the gf hates it cuz im always on the computer or modding the truck!

like i said, ive tried to search for this mod to confirm my theories but turned up with nothing so i apologize if this is a repost. and also...go easy on me...this is my first contribution to TW. :)

my friend had an older 4runner (90-94) and he had the clutch start cancel button on his rig. since then ive always thought it was the coolest thing. haha. plus i like the fact of not having to sit inside and push the clutch to start it. and this puts me one step closer to remote start. (still undecided though) but been researching and havent seen any threads on it. only thing ive seen was closing the circuit on the harness behind the clutch to start it without pushing in the clutch. i thought about doing it this way but figured i'd take it another step and add a push button switch so it would also sort of act as a deterrent. cuz even if you push in the clutch it wont budge. you'll get chimes and lights. thats about it. so you have to push the button to start it.

the best thing about this mod is that its super easy. takes 20 min tops. the longest part of it is drilling the hole in the blank to fit your switch.

first, i cut about 2 strips of 16ga. automotive wire, both 18 inches in length. i just had this lying around the garage. stripped about 1/4" off both ends. (i cut extra wire just to be safe. feel free to take your own measurements.)

one end will connect to your switch. it doesnt really matter what type of switch you buy. i was able to hook up a push button and a rocker type switch . i ended up going with the push button. all you need is something to complete the circuit. the push button i bought has 4 pins sticking out the back. two pos+ and two neg-. of the two wires i stripped, i split the exposed 1/4" into two. one went to a pos+ the other to a neg-. i looped the wire through the hole and twisted to keep it secure.

i initially soldered the connections without thinking. this resulted in melting plastic and melting the components inside of the switch.

    DO NOT SOLDER.

next, youre going to want to drill a hole in a desired location, big enough to fit your switch. i have a 2wd base model so i have 7 blanks under my a/c vent on my drivers side. hahahaha!! i used the biggest one which is a flat square piece.

next, locate the harness behind your clutch pedal with two wires running to it. unplug the harness. for test purposes i hopped in my seat, mashed the clutch pedal to the floor and turned the key.....nothing. so i knew i had the right wires.

at this point you can either cut the two wires from the harness and solder to the new wires connected to the switch. i didnt do this because you have a limited length to play with the wires under the dash and considering im about 5'11" 260 lbs. im lucky enough to be flexible enough to even see that far under the dash. :p
what i did was took the end of the wires that i stripped, opposite of the switch, and twisted the wire. then shoved it right into the harness. tested the switch. tried starting it with the switch in the off position. only chimes and lights. then turned the switch to the on position...

turned the key, and she fired right up. :D

did a couple more test runs with the switch to confirm it was working properly and then started stuffing the excess wire into the dash and re-inserted the blank. and then superglued the switch to the blank. (make sure not to get it on your hands)....i refused to take my own advice and had a quick OSM ("Oh Shit!" Moment) when i got my middle finger stuck to my switch. hahaha.

lastly, i had silicone lying around from when i did the BHLM so i just dabbed some into the harness that i jammed the wires into to make sure they stuck in there.

EDIT: just realized that if you want to keep it to where you still can push in the clutch to start it but also add a push button switch, all you have to do is use two quick splices and tap into the two wires on the harness and connect that to the two wires coming from the switch. know what i mean? :)

even though this is basic electronics/wiring, im not the brightest when it comes to electrical and this mod was based off just sheer theory. hahaha. so unfortunately i did not take pictures because i wasnt even sure it was going to work. and when it did work, i was too tired, lazy and unwilling to take it all apart to take pictures for you guys. so i apologize. hopefully my post was detailed enough to where you can figure it out. if not, just ask and you shall receive. :) i'll be willing to take some pics.

sorry for no pictures, hope you guys enjoy, and all feedback is welcomed. :)

So instead of having to turn the key to the "on" position and then pushing the Clutch start cancel button, you can just hit the switch and start her up in neutral??

The only reason i dont use the clutch start cancel as a remote start is because i never park in neutral.

ohh, no. i wish i was that good. haha. but i have the base model so it doesnt come with the clutch start cancel button. so basically i added a button so that i dont have to push in the clutch but i still have to turn the key. i did it more for convenience. so if im standing outside the truck and i want to start it i dont have to jump in to start it. and then im a step closer when i add remote start.

When I installed my remote start on my 6spd. I just pulled the harness apart at the clutch switch and shoved a paper-clip in it.

If I had youngsters I probably would have gone to the trouble of wiring a relay, but this works for now.

yeah! that works too. but i like the look of the switch and the fact that the switch has to be engaged to be able to start the engine. and no relay needed for this mod. :)

I wonder how hard would it be to wire in OEM Toyota clutch cancel switch... Having to puch in the clutch while starting every time gets hella annoying...

wait, you have an OEM switch already installed? but just not hooked up? or is that a picture from another truck? haha.

but i dont think it would be too hard. from what i understand from reading up on another post i came across from a guy who wanted to install one...he said that most of our trucks are already pre wired for it and just need the harness to complete the connection. not sure how credible that info is tho. haha.

but if that is a pic of your truck, would you mind taking a picture of the back of that CSC switch?? :D

ok, cuz u have the base model like me, right?

but if u find an OEM switch for cheap, let me know! hahaha. cuz I've looked and seen em on toyotapart.com for $42!!

had no luck on eBay either. only from the 90-94 runners that Toyota originally made em on. :(

    None yet! It's new!
So, just unplug the connection from the switch on the clutch pedal and short the two sides. No more need to press the cancel switch. Did that on my first generation, and did that on my '09.

    Takes roughly one minute.

my switch only cost me $4.99 from pep boys, i think thats better than $42! hahaha.
