No brake lights with trailer hooked up

so i was planning a little road trip gonna trailer my bike and hit up philly then leave from there on the bike to canada and was gonna leave tomorrow around 10am...i went and got the trailer from my uncle the tail lights work and the turn signals but i dont have any brake lights....is there an adapter harness or do i just have a wiring problem

edit brake lights work on the bed but not on the trailer...

 

Start with the easy stuff, clean the terminals, check the wires to make sure they're not cut or chaffed. You can clean the terminals with emory cloth or a small pipe cleaner and some electric grease to prevent further corrosion. If that doesn't work, then start tracing the wiring back and see if it's a wire splice or one of the connections. After that, it would depend on whether it was an aftermarket plug and play or stock 7-pin.

 

It may be the lightbulbs also. I had this happen on a trailer & it turned out to need new bulbs. If that isn't the problem, then as Pugga said.

Also check your ground wire on the trailer. It also could be the wiring harness box on your truck. These do go bad. I went through 3 of them on my 2005 Tacoma.

 

I have the same problem on a new trailer I purchased on Sat.

 

With a new trailer. I would suspect your wiring harness on your truck. There is a box that the harness connects too. The box is the controller sorta speak. It could have gone bad, or your wire connector is corroded. Or the ground may need to be checked. If you don't have a volt meter, then you can pickup from the auto parts store a very cheap wire tester for a few bucks. It has a lightbulb on the end. This is a good way to test your wiring harness.

Worse case scenario for $35 you can replace your wiring harness.



I've had to replace this on my 2005 Tacoma several times.
