2011 Tacoma Double Cab: 4 or 6 Cylinders?

Anyone here think gas will be cheaper in 10 years.

The I4 is plenty of power for me in the access cab, and you will get better mpg with the I4.

 

I like my 4 cyl but for purposes it is powerful enough and I think I get a little better mpg than I would with a 6.

Real world mpg depends on your driving style. If your ranger is properly tuned check and see if you get mpg as stated on the sticker. I tend to drive soft and get hwy mpg or better for my regular driving (winter gas and break in impact my fuelly average)

 

they say the v6 is the most fuel efficient for the given power and torque
personaly i would go for a v6 man! even though the 2011 I4 cyl would be as strong if not stronger than the 96s v6

I wanted a 4 cyl double cab for a daily commuter. I couldn't see paying new price for one as they released this year. I found my 05 TRD Sport for a really good price nicely loaded and at a really good price. If i had the choice, for just a commuter, I would take the smaller engine and better mpg. For playing and running the interstate, pulling a boat or med. to larger trailer, the 4.0 is great! It really depends on what your gonna do with it.

I don't know what you mean though, the I4 cruising at 65 uses less fuel than the V6 at the same speed all day long.

A Prerunner, is a 2wd truck with the same suspension and body style as a 4x4 model truck. The only difference in the body style between a standard base model and a Prerunner/4x4 is the factory fender flares. It has no lift from the factory. The only trucks with a Prerunner badge are 2wd unless someone added a badge to their truck. I doubt the average 4x4 owner would add a prerunner badge to his truck. The only other major difference is that the base model is a 5 lug, meaning the wheels are 15" with 5 lugs. The Prerunners/4x4's are 6 lug, with 16 or 17" wheels.
OP, that being cleared up, you can not get a Prerunner dbl cab with the 4cyl. Its only available in the base model. Toyota started offering the 4cyl base model dbl cab this year. I feel with the family, you will be fine with a base model dbl cab 4 cyl unless you really need the power and speed. But, if you also like the idea of being higher up, with a better suspension and more power, get the prerunner dbl cab. Alot more truck just in case.

 

PSJ I do believe you can get a DC 4cyl pre-runner. To the OP you just need to test drive them, But I honestly don't think a a 4cyl would be a bad choice

 

You would be fine with the I4. If you drive it and it has good enough acceleration and hill climbing on mountain grades and you don't intend to tow the 4 banger will be more economical to operate maintain in the long run. I would prefer mine was the i4. My neighbor has an access I4 and Its a great truck. I would not hesitate to buy a DC in a 4 cyl.

This is coming from personal experience with a double cab 4 door. Do not get a 4cyclinder if you are going to get a double cab, the power is terrible my truck actually cant speed up on the interstate if there is a hill and i live in fl, dont even want to think about real mountains and hills. I wish everyday I got a v6 but cant change that till i get out of college. I actually dont get that great of gas mileage if your thinking you will get better. I have friends who have the v6 and get better gas mileage because a 4 cyclinder is two small for a dbl cab truck in my opinion. It does ok but if you are a guy who likes to even maybe speed up a little faster then normal dont go 4 cyclinder unless you plan on getting a reg cab or ext cab. Just my opinion.

 

Cost of driving will stay expensive regardless. Look at the states taxing hybrids and hydrogen vehicles to recover lost revenue from gasoline. If gas goes up, the I4 won't help you that much. To get a financially significant boost in milage, you'd be stuck between a Jetta diesel and a micro-car like the Scion iQ, like they do in Japan or Europe. Unlike them, we don't get cheap beer in exchange to dull the pain.

 

You are right, but the OP stated he wanted to buy a 2011. The current model truck is not available in a Prerunner, Dbl Cab 4cyl. They were available with the first gens though?

 

Yeah i have the 03 prerunner 4 cyclinder dbl cab so yes they did, and mine is trd its almost like a haha fake got you kind of thing when people always ask if its a 4x4.

 

I'm almost positive that I saw a guy on the forum no to long ago had a 2011 set up like that. Where's that darned Chris4x4 when you need him

 

^ Availability is dependent on region. If I put in 90210 as the zip code, Prerunner, Dbl Cab 4cyl is available through Toyota's configurator. If I put in 02138 (Boston), Prerunners are not available, period.

 

I think the confusion is the 5-lug I4 has the fender flares, but not the lift of the pre-runner.

Edit: toyota.com lists a I4 4dr prerunner.

 

OP, The current 4 cyl is a great motor. You may want to go over to the 4cyl section a read a few threads there. Everyday it seems we are reading about the new DBL CAB 4cyl, so you may get real life comments to help you in your choice, as well as get a feel of the abilities or shortcomings of the 4cyl. I would get one if it was available in the 5 spd.

 

You are correct, the 2011 Double Cab prerunner now comes with a 4 banger option.

 

The base, 5 lug I4 does not have fender flares. Only the Prerunner/4x4 models have factory fender flares, as well as suspension differences.

I take that back, now I may be confused. I do remember seeing a photo recently of a dbl cab 4cyl base model, but it had black flares? The thread discussed how funny it looked - a base model with fender flares? I can not remember now if it was a package deal, like the SR5 model or?

No sir, there is now a 4 door 5 lug tacoma, complete with factory flares. Ugly as sin too.
