The change on the belt isnt that bad as long as you have the routing diagram. I could not find it under the hood or in the owner's manual. Haynes or Chilton manual would be a good investment.

I replaced my OEM @ 60k with another OEM. The original still looks good (no cracks) and has been stored behind the back seat just as a backup just in case.

Make a little diagram before you take off the old belt. Gatorbacks are good, they hydroplane less than the full rib belts. This is handy if you ford rivers and have to go through large puddles frequently.

I just replaced the serpentine belt on the wife's 08 4.0L 4Runner yesterday evening. The belt had 86K miles on it and it really didn't look that worn. I replaced it with a Goodyear Gatorback belt. All of the idlers were fine except for one. The top passenger side idler had a tiny bit of wobble to it so I ordered a new Gates 36173 idler this morning.

I replaced mine as a precautionary measure after my CV axle boot tore flipping grease everywhere causing my serpentine belt to slip creating a burning rubber smell. Took like 5-10 minutes to replace. I used OEM. Super easy.

I've replaced plenty of serpentine belts over the years and have only 2 reasons why you'd changed one: 1. It's obviously worn out with cracks or obvious tears etc. 2. You just want to for whatever reason ("piece of mind", squealing, once of these Gators that don't hydro, etc.). It's very uncommon for these belts to just snap or break randomly so if the thing looks fine I wouldn't personally bother changing it, just check it every few months or whenever you do an oil change.

And in terms of how "hard" it is, you only need one wrench on the tensioner pulley and it'll come right off. Keep track of the correct order with a diagram to make installing the new one easier. Once it's on there and you know the order is correct, let the tensioner pulley back down to tighten it and then do a bump start just to make sure everything is fitted perfect. For those that don't know/haven't heard of this bump start, it's just where you tap the ignition so it spins the pulleys but doesn't actually start the truck. What it does is move the belt around a little so you can make sure it's properly seated everywhere before turning it on all the way and possibly throwing the new belt off by accident cuz you couldn't see one of the bottom pulleys well.

i kinda agree with this guy. i was a delinquent husband and ignored my wife's subaru for awhile. one night she was pulling into the driveway and i heard her belt squeeking..not loud, just a quiet chirp. i took a look with a flashlight and i was STUNNED!! the thing was like ribboned. i have pics somewhere. it was coming apart like string cheese. it held fine. i dont think these things fail catastrophically very often.

    i installed a Gates.

Change it when it needs changing. If you're worried about the trip, carry a new one with you. I changed mine with over 70k miles on it and only because my idlers were going out anyways.

Working at my last job (jiffy lube I'm sad to admit) I saw plenty of REALLY badly worn belts that REALLY needed replacement but they were still holding. I've only once heard of one just flying apart but that was also a very worn belt being put under high stress while wheeling. The real detriment that happens in these highly worn belt situations is that the belt actually stretches out and can fling debris into parts of the engine, these two things can prematurely wear out other parts like pulleys.
