Sport has a limited slip rear differential while the off-road has an electronic locking rear differential.

Ok so what are some of the better things on a sport VS the off road ? from what I've seen it sounds like the sport is a wannabe off road with a hood scoop ??

If you plan on actually off roading, get the sport, as the diff will not self destruct.
And do the yellow wire mod.

Good for you. You treat it like a baby and drive like a girl.
My first one was fine, till 18000kms, when it cratered.
My second one was fine till I towed 9000kms, then it screamed.
My third one was fine, till it got 20000kms of highway miles, by my wife, comuting. Then it sang a tune as well.
Now I have #4, and the time bomb sound great!
Lot's of failures on record by other folks. The difference is some of bought the truck with a locker to get us place the unlocked diff won't go. And I will never make excuses for using it.
But I would rather a truck that get's stuck and doesn't break, vs a truck that breaks, because then I'm both stuck, and broken.
Again, lots of other failures, anything less than an 8" ring on a 4500# truck is a bad joke. (Look at any other midsize.....)

    Not quite...

unless you are speaking of 2005 to 2008 Sports Only.

Toyota discontinued the mechanical limited slip rear differential... and now ALL Tacomas since 2009 have traction control (brake system limited slip) called TRAC and AUTO LSD in 2WD (with and without engine regulation)and TRAC in 4WD-HIGH (without engine regulation).

This TRAC system provides limited slip on the front and rear axles in H2 and H4 (L4 is only open differentials, except the Off Road TRD).

The non-Off Road Tacomas can do the 4-Lo trac mod (yellow wire mod) to get TRAC to work in L4.

One thing no other Tacoma except the '09 + 4WD Off Road TRDs has is

    1) A-TRAC (creates the traction of front and rear lockers in low range) and

    2) the Hydraulic Brake Booster... this booster increases the power of the limited slip system to lock the rotation of a non-traction tire... it may also increase the traction in high range. Of course all Off Roads also have

    3) the rear locking differential.

I am on my third Off Road 4WD Tacoma, and this one with A-TRAC is the greatest upgrade for off roading Toyota has ever made!

Photos are available to see my truck in various off road situations... links below...
