I want to get a Tacoma PreRunner 4x2 with a Regular Cab and a manual transmission. Preferably a 2001. Is a manual transmission available? I'm doing research on Cars.com and edmunds.com and yahooauto.com and they all say that only an automatic transmission is available. Thanks

    Thanks

That's what I thought but most of them I'm seeing have an automatic. I did figure out that the regular cab 4x4 has a manual tranny option.

Okay, I figured it out. Only the 4x4 version of the regular cab offers a manual tranny. It was driving me crazy because I'd found one on autotrader that had a stick shift in the picture but it was not a 4x4. But after looking closer at the back end, I noticed it didn't have the "PreRunner" emblem on the tailgate. I guess they just took one of the little base models (that do offer a manual tran) and stuck some big tires on it and gave it a lift kit trying to pass it off as a PreRunner.

So I guess if I want a manual tranny I gotta get a 4x4. I hate automatic trannies. Too expensive to fix. But I don't know about a 4x4. Worse gas mileage, right? Maybe I'll just settle for the automatic. Crap!

Regular cabs? The extended cab prerunner does offer a manual.

No prerunners at all from the 1998-2004 models were made with a manual. The 05+ 4 cyls. were only available with a manual, which is why I bought one. Now, 2011+ I believe you can only get a manual with a 4x4. It really bothers me, i hate automatics.

This really sucks. I hate automatics but I don't like the 2nd gen. body style. It seems like such a small truck should have a manual tranny. Like a no-brainer.

wow really? so you can't get a regular prerunner 4cyl in a manual?? Wtf?? that seems like a must.

Bummer tho man. however...why wouldn't you want 4x4??

With the additional weight of the bigger tires and beefier suspension over the base 4x2 the prerunner gets about the same mpg as the 4X4. I bought the base 5 lug for gas mileage and didn't think I needed 4X4 but I have regretted not getting the 4X4 over and over. It's definitely worth the hit in MPG to have 4X4 when you need it.

Look for one with manual hubs. It's nice to know that my front running gear isn't moving, only thing is you have to get out and engage the hubs for 4WD.

..please get your facts straight. ...manual hubs came stock. From 95.5 all the way until 2000, you got either ADD or manual hubs. Please don't spread wrong information around..

Hmm.. manual hubs can be swapped over to 01-04's even hmm.. look at my prerunner with manual hubs..

I have NEVER seen a tacoma with maual hubs...like...ever stock.

And your doing a swap..so manual hubs makes sense to go with manual hubs. But again...stock??...really??....:notsure:..

    Edit:

Did a bit of reading and ill be a monkeys uncle! but it seems it was only the 4cyl models..SR5s came with auto hubs..

And I'm a proud owner of one. That's why I suggested looking for one with manual hubs. OP was worried about gas mileage.

It means manual locking hubs which you engage manually hence the name. Also refer to the pics posted by higherlux and SafetyDang to see what manual locking hubs look like.
