    Liquid refrigerant drains back into the pump, and then when the pump engages it momentarily goes over-pressure and makes that noise. Not much you can do about it.

    I have found that if you wait about 30 seconds after starting you engine before engaging the A/C that the clunking sound isn't as bad.
