Ok so I was out looking at a new 07 tacoma the other night, letme first say nice little truck ;) But I wasnt sure if the sales guy knew what he was talking about....

He said on the trdsport 4x4(all they had) there was no limited slip diff, but the computer automatically sensed wheel spin and locked up the rear and when it was in 4x4 mode the rear was always locked. I have never read heard of that on a tacoma but then again I am new here ;)

And on the trd offroad 4x4 it had a limit slip diff and came with a locking rear that you can manually engage(saw the button).

Everything I have seen says the sport has a limited slip just like the offroad, unless im looking at the wrong stuff lol.

Maybe someone can clarify what this guy was saying if its true or not etc.

    Thanks!

Besides having a non functional Hood Scoop, and stiffer shocks for the road for around $150 more than the Off Road model, the Sport model does have a limited slip that locks when the rear wheel senses a loss of traction. The Off-Road does not have a limited slip; instead it has an electronic manual locking rear diff engaged by the button you switch in the Off Road model. The main difference is the limited slip in the Sport will engage as I mentioned earlier will engage automatically when the rear wheel loses traction and disengage after traction has been restored. For the Off Road the driver has to manually lock the rear Diff by the switch, and unlock it when traction is gained.

The reasons are Off Road enthusiast who rock climb or go mudding in low gear/low speeds like to have the diff already lock so there's less of a chance of losing traction. In the Tacoma the Locking Diff is only to be used in slow speeds.

    Hopefully this answers your question.

Ok and how does the rearend act in 4Hi on the offroad version? Does the same thing apply its only going to power one of the rear wheels unless dropped into 4Low and the locker manually engaged will both tires in the back operate? Where the sport version will lock and unlock the rear as needed in any setting 2hi 4hi or 4low?

I am no guru but what I've read is that the off-road has an open-diff, in whatever setting, until the rear locker is engaged.

I think you are correct on Sport regarding the rear mechanical LSD. By the way, all I know about it being 'mechanical' is that it does not use a clutch.

Yes, you are correct. Only one of the rear wheels receives power on the Off Road; unless the driver switches to 4-Lo and engages the locking Diff. The Sport will do so as you mentioned.

You telling me Toyota made an Off Road version shittier than Sport, I no think so...Off Road model is different shocks springs rear end and a better locking rear end. Nuff said.
