    Hey there,
My truck got hit in a parking lot today. I called my Insurance and started a claim, then I got a call from the lady's insurance that hit me. I am trying to decide whether I should go through my insurance or the lady who hit me. Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using my insurance? This is the first time I've made an insurance claim.

Won't my insurance just bill her company after the adjuster checks it out?

    Yep.
A claim is a claim, they still have to pay the repair and so you become a higher risk and rates go up.

    Make her company cover it.

Possibly, but you should be asking your agent these questions.

Just a bunch of old crap
    Um, not exactly!

If the police report shows someone else at fault, they can't legally raise your rates just because of this. You're not a risk any more than you were before the accident. Unless you have Joe Schmoe Hillbilly insurance, then they'll find some creative way to raise your rates, but any major reputable company won't. Allstate, State Farm, American Family, etc. are good. Geico, Progressive, etc are all internet crank-them-out policies that may be a little more challenging to deal with.

Regardless, you want to always use the other person's insurance so you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Use your own and you will have to pay your deductible ($0-1000 depending on your policy).

Look, I have American Family. I love my rates and my coverage. I have had 3 claims on my policy in the 8 years I've been with them (one being for over $4k just in body damage), and none were my fault. My rate has literally only gone up $6 a month in that time (barely covers standard US inflation). You do the math.

I would go through your insurance company. You will have to pay your deductible at first, but you will be reimbursed when your company subrogates with the lady's insurance company. This will not cause your rates to go up when an accident or claim is not your fault. You will have more control of the situation with your insurance company. You get to choose where it gets worked on and the repair work can start immediately. The other insurance company may drag its feet to pay for your repair...when I got hit, my car sat in the body shop parking lot for three weeks after the repair while the other party's insurance company was "delivering" the check.

Well shit! I hope that doesn't happen! I decided to go thru her insurance and its getting looked at tomorrow morning. I want the check delivered to me; not the repair shop!

Good idea going through her insurance. And really awesome that she hit your truck and went back to 'fess up, not many people like her around.
