. So I am in Mesa, CO on vacation. Original plan was to camp my way around Colorado, Utah and South Dakota this summer. Well here I am in Mesa right next to Grand Mesa. Absolutely amazing!!! 90 degrees in Mesa, drive up top and you can still find snow in some areas. But its in the 60's and 70's durring the day. There are trails all over. If anyone knows about this area or lives near here, I would love to hear from you. Maybe hit some trail...

Anyway, I decided to take a trail with my truck (218,450 miles) the other day. I didn't think too much of it, after all, I took a few trails in the past couple months and they were just dirt/stone roads. No big deal, a trail is a trail. So I drive to Vega Res and took trail 262 south, 262 was a bit more rough than the other trails I was on. The plan was to take 262 to 260 to 121 to Hwy 65 and back to mesa. After finding 260 I took it, there was a stream I needed to cross, only 25-30' across. The water looked to be maybe 2' deep but it was cruising about 5 knts or better. I didn't want to take a chance in that so back to 262. 127 was only a mile further so away I went. Now this Tacoma is my only transportation and if something happenes I'm fu screwed big time. So its about 2:00pm now, I was planning on being home by 3:00, so the shorter the trail the better, 127 it is. I made it about 2 miles up 127, over ruts, not bad, over bowling ball size rocks, slow and easy, next mud, I'm locked in 4wd so away I go. Did I mention I have Perelli Scorpion A/T's stock size. So I hit the mud slow but accelerating so I don't get stuck. Next larger rocks numerous streams and then bigger rocks about 24" average. And the terrain is getting worse. I'm bottoming out, getting slammed and I'm just crawling along. I have about 5 more miles ahead of unknown terrain, I've had people on fourwheelers giving me looks all the way, and my option was to turn around. I knew what was ahead if I did, so that was it. It was the roughest terrain I've had my truck on and I had a pucker factor of 6. I was more relaxed crashing a Cessna 172. If I breakdown, no one kbows where I am, my tools are at home but I do have 5 gallons of water. Well it took 2 1/2 hours to get out. I was shaken, not stirred. Got home, did a walk around and everything looked ok. Yesterday I decided to take a closer look, my right rear shock was dangling below my axle. The weld connecting the shock to the lower mount ripped out of the shock. No idea when it happened, but it did. My shocks were two years old. I called Autozone and they told me to bring it in for warrantee. I didn't have a 17mm or 11/16" wrench. When I got to Autozone in Grand Junction, I was able to borrow the tools and then replaced both shocks under warrantee. Autozone ROCKS!!! And those Perelli tires, OUTSTANDING!!!
Anyway, I wish I had a 4 wheeling partner, just in case. 4wheelen alone kinda sucks.
I hope you enjoyed my adventure. Now I'm curious about the rest if 127...

Do you do any four wheeling at all?

    Have you modified your truck?

    Jay

Ps: I'm heading into grand junction in awhile, if you're near there,
and if you have some time this weekend, maybe we can meet?
If you're having any issues with your tacoma, I might be able to help you. Mechanic for years....
