Saved by hide-a-key

So I'm at BLOWES buying some stuff to fix the roof, I get out to the divetaco, unlock the foldacover, open it and turn the key back to the locked position and pull the keys out while the cover is still open, I drop in the items I bought, I let the cover close and at the same time I drop my keys in the bed and noticed that my truck locked when the keys hit the bed!
UGHH, did this really just happen! I check the doors and sure enough when the keys hit the bottom of the bed the "lock" button somehow got pressed and locked the doors.
Now I'm screwed! I call my wife at home and while I was in the middle of explaining this weird chain of events I remember, I have a hide-a-key! YEAH!
The first night I brought the truck home the first thing I did was stash the valet key in one of those magnetic boxes in a discreet location.
So I was able to get in, get the spare key for the foldacover, retrieve my keys and be on my way. What a relief.
Have you had to use your key, do you have one?

 

Cool story i havent had to use a spare key knock on wood but it would suck if i had to.

 

I don't think you should be telling peeps you have a hide-a-key. Just my opinion. Cool save though I will admit that. Hopefully, most would have the credit card key to open the door.
Just out of curiosity, with the time you took to write this, you could have taken a pic of your new decal. LOL! I had to CAdiveTaco. I'm sorry.

 

I don't trust leaving a spare key anywhere on the truck. I just try and be responsible, but I know accidents can happen. I leave the spare set at home.

I hear you all and I appreciate the advice. Can you get the credit cards key only from the dealer?

 

That I don't know. A master key maker/Locksmith should be able to make one for you. I personally don't have one, but if I were to choose between the two, then I'd go for the credit card version.

I've been meaning to hide one for a while.. Keep putting it of though

 

I have two sets of keys on me instead of hiding one.

One set is on a carabiner on my belt, including the keyless remote.

The other set is in the mini pocket in my jeans

 

Hahaha, this is why I love Ford's keypad on the door. I use that shit even when I don't need to get into the Exped! It's awesome!

 

I go hunting alot all alone and I always have a fear of locking my keys up in the truck or losing them somewhere in the mountains so the first thing I do when I get a new truck is to have a door key made to get me inside my truck.
A double cut Toyota key is only about $2 at the local hardware store. I paint this key black and hide it under my truck, I use a piece of wire and tie it on the inside of the frame where there is no danger of anyone finding it. I hide a factory key (w/chip in it) inside the truck somewhere.
I have only had to use this setup once and it was priceless.

The hide-a-keys are known for not being there when you need them and thiefs know to look for them.

This is just what works for me.

I carry two keychains, one withe the truck key and keyfob, another which is always on my pocket with my house keys and truck valet key.....

 

why dont other auto makers use the keypad like the Ford's? Does Ford have a patent on that because it is such a good idea. when we go dirt biking or scuba diving in my buddies ford truck its nice to be able just lock the keys inside and use the key pad to get in

 

A remote will unlock your doors even over a cell phone connection. Try it. I have had my wife unlock my previous vehicle (VW Jetta) by putting the phone up to the door and having her push the spare remote at home.

no way. this can't be true.

 

The button probably didn't get pressed when it hit the bed. If you use the keyless entry to unlock the doors but then don't open the doors within a certain(somewhat quick) time period, it will automatically lock itself. It's a safety feature I guess. But yeah, it was probably coincidence that it locked when the fab hit the bed. Good thing you had a spare! Locksmith's are friggin expensive!

 

I don't actually know...I would think so because it's one of the best things ever but I'm not sure.
