4.6 V8, am I the only one who see's the magic?

Who the F wants to swap out a 4.6 !!! Take the cost and what U end up with. Oh U want a stock replacement type thing HAHA! If you want to do that F it Go get your self s small block 327 SJ ( WHO Knows what SJ) 350 what ever build it ,rip that Tacoma apart mak it fit we we. F all this 4.6- 4.7 V F-FN whatever. just build the 4.0. How many blowers,turbo F-EN but plugs do U want to post about JUST DO IT! Dam I comboed more cars when I was 19. Probably because it's a diesel. Which is why a Taco with a small diesel would kick ass, sipping fuel while towing stronger than the gasser.

 

Yea we are not the first to want more diesel truck options. In my opinion gassers should have been phased out years ago. But its gunna be a pretty shitty decade and i dont think toyota or any automaker is going to take the gamble with making small diesel automobiles.

And yes a taco w a small diesel would kick ass but it would be a hell of a gamble for toyota to put a diesel in the best selling small truck of all time.

 

The U.S. market does not support diesels like the European market does with more diesels than gasoline. We also jump on the Asian market which is cheaper and focuses more on the hybrid line-up. Might as well chalk it up as a loss because the funding and energy focus is just not with the diesel and biofuel market on a large scale.

 

The US market does not currently support diesels, because the US market does not have diesel options. You can buy diesel anything in Europe, in the US you can buy...what, a 3/4 ton or larger pickup truck for $50,000, or one of a couple of VW models, at 40% higher than base cost. In Europe you can buy a VW diesel for less than 10% higher than the base cost.

The US market doesn't support diesels because the US diesel supply is not similar in any way to the European supply.

Bad logic: the market would support diesel if they offered it. Especially the pickup truck market where owners aren't put off by the 'dirty diesel' myths.

The problem is the government has regulated diesel (engines... emissions... fuel) to the point it's hard put one in a vehicle and make it attractively affordable.

 

Why would anyone want a different engine than the 1GRFE 4.0 V6? The motor is, IMO, one of the best production V6 ever made. The truck has plenty of power, I mean you see people running 35's and even 37's off it with a re-geared rear end. And hell, us Tacoma owners aren't even seeing the best it has to give. The 4runner and FJ get the Double VVT-i version with an extra 30 horses or so, and then there is always the TRD blower option. In my opinion, Toyota just needs to offer a package with Double VVT-i AND the blower on a "TRD Performance Package" version of the truck. That would be far better than any heavy V8 being thrown in there.

Discussions like this make me wish I was old enough to drive in the late 60s. I like choices and who here doesn't like to make it personal?

In a Camaro, you could get anything from a bulletproof straight 6 to a small block V8 to a big block V8. And...transmissions, rear ends, suspensions, etc. to match the power. You want it? You got it. Chevy would build it for you. Ah...the good ol' days...

I like the two engines available now, but an upgraded 4.0, a turbo or SC option for the 4 banger would be even better. But damn, add the options of a 4.6 and a turbo diesel? Everybody gets what they want!

I've had V8s and had a supercharged 3.4 in my '98 and like them both, but a 4.6 would be fun to drive and a turbo diesel would be very, very nice to have. It would have been a coin toss kind of decision if Toyota offered them.

 

This....environmental regs have priced diesels out of the market in the US...that's why the only small vehicles with diesel you can buy are the Volkswagen TDI models, and VW loses money on every single one of them they sell.

Europe is overrun with small diesels because they make sense in every other metric if they aren't regulated to hell. Cheaper, more power, better economy.

 

Europe is overrun with small anything because there is a heavy tax penalty for any vehicle with engines of greater than a 2 liter displacement. All the proletariat can afford is small displacement... leaving big iron for the bourgeois.

 

Thank you for mentioning that. The hilux is pretty much the same thing as a taco but with a diesel, and just sexy.

 

Plus, the market is adjusted for that over there. They have small cars that are premium cars. Here in the US small is synonymous with shitty, at least in the collective conscious. Thank God Ford is trying to buck that trend with the new Focus, which IMO absolutely justifies its mid-20s pricetag in a vehicle in the same size range as the Corolla and Civic.

 

Who here bought a truck solely based on MPG's??? If i wanted good mileage i would've bought a prius that runs off your farts. And throwing a small block in one of these bad chickens would be awesome, For the hardcore wheeler having that torque off the bottom end with the thing fully locked would be was better. As far as daily driving goes a v8 will not help with MPG's. Cool factor would be way up tho.

 

I bought mine because I specifically wanted to spend in the $30,000 vehicle neighborhood, and couldn't find a vehicle for that cost with a 16ish MPG after a lift and 33's.....

 

The v8 in question doesn't give us any of the things you are talking about. If they are going to put a v8 in the Taco, i want to see 300+ hp and 350+ lbft of torque. That won't happen so they can keep giving us a great v6.

 

Then you want to see a whole new drivetrain and another $6k in pricetag to match it...which it why it won't happen, because then the Taco will have priced itself into contention with the Tundra.

 

i know it will add a bunch to the price tag. If they are going to do it they need to do it right. Unlike what they did with 4runner. That v8 was a pooch. I'm happy as hell with the 4.0 v6. I would like to see the updated v6 in the new tacoma.
