    So he was asking you?

Do you have it and have you used it at all?

    Answer:

You don't use A-TRAC in the dunes unless you are stuck and need to climb out... Once out, H4 (TRAC) is better... and you can drive more than 30 mph without the engine red-lining.

A-TRAC is auto sensing and only works in low range... much like TRAC does in H4... Only if one tire per axle spins free of the other does A-TRAC or TRAC go into action to place power where it does any good... THE TRACTION TIRE.

In sand, you need floatation... too much traction will just get you stuck (why mud tires are terrible in sand compared to AT or street tires. You deflate tires to run sand, you do not go into low range and increase your torque.

If you people want an honest answer on 4 wheeling in the desert or beach, I will tell you what works and not make up stuff for some drama...

    Seriously...

Maybe you should change your sig. because it says you have a SPORT (no A-TRAC)? Why are your Sport brakes worn out?

he did not ask me, but just like yourself, i'll get on my soapbox whenever i need to to combat you on ATRAC. no one ever asks you for your .02 on ATRAC when they are asking about traction devices on pre-09 tacomas, but we all know it's coming and then BOOM, there it is. i know of people that have had ATRAC overheat while using it in a creek of all places. so yes, it will overheat and shutdown. it's not the perfect messiah. was it being used 100% as you your glorified guide, no idea, but i do know it happened and will happen.

Wow someone got offended. Maybe I was asking Jhodge. Everyone knows he is the master know all of everything a-trac:rolleyes:

Anyways, lockers are better. I dont have to wait until I get stuck. I just use it and dont get stuck AND my brakes dont wear out :D

Toyota doesn't offer a front locker in the Tacoma... So, to remain a total Toyota product, not spend thousands more $$$, and keep the warranty unaffected you get A-TRAC if you want full traction... It works... Why does something good from Toyota bother anyone? My brakes are fine and they get no more wear from four wheeling than if I lived on a mountain road. Brakes are the most well engineered part of a car (not to fail), afterall. Using the brakes to limit wheel slip is pure genius!

Completely wrong. Tire type does not matter, only inflation pressure.

    http://4x4abc.com/jeep101/soft-sand-deflate.html

People who get stuck in sand with MTs are throttling too much at high pressure, just like people who get stuck with other tire types.

Detroit full time locker, air down to 10psi, stomp on the gas and have a great time. No electronics, no front axles required.

No, not completely wrong and your link proves my point...

The link shows a MT tread in sand at 10 PSI and a AT tread at full pressure! Both were not stuck, and the full pressure AT did have a deeper track than the deflated MT.

If the MT was left at full pressure it would be WAY deeper than the full pressure AT track if it didn't get stuck (it probably would have)!

I had a MT tire (Cooper Discoverer SST) with 3 ply sidewall abd aggressive deep tread... IT WAS TERRIBLE in sand COMPARED to the BFG Rugged Trail, Hankok Dynapro ATm, Toyo Open Country AT, Cooper Discoverer ATR, & Pep Boys Dakota AT (which I have run all in sand on my 3 Tacomas.

The Mud tire required deflation to 10 PSI before it would start to 'work' at all, in sand (just like the link photo MT track)... Where-as the other tires (all of them) will start to work in sand at 20 psi and get better as you drop towards 15 psi.

Air pressure is everything, but for sure the sidewall stiffness and the aggressive tread pattern will require MORE air REMOVED.

The best sand tire is one that has vertually no tread, as you want to dig in as little as possible.

This comes from my personal experience with sand driving for over 40 years... not a web site.

So, the link is correct... a mud tire will need to be dropped to 10 psi (or less) to work in deep sand. But, I am also correct in that tread pattern does affect sand driving... and deep mud treads require more air removed than AT or highway tires. ;)

You need to understand that these types of statements that keep coming from you make me much less likely to take your statements seriously.

Personal experience is minimally relevant; Anecdotal evidence is the weakest kind statistically speaking. Scientific stuff works better. Harald Pietschmann (bio here: http://www.4x4abc.com/MBUSA/bio.html) is so involved in the science and engineering of 4wd dynamics that Porsche, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and others go to him for advice on how to build their four wheel drive vehicles.

You think the 09+ OR edition Tacomas are "offroad ready" from the factory floor. Plus, I just don't like you very much.

So pardon me while I discount your experience based on your past goofball statements and go with experts with a resume. Toodles.

So what? The point is tire dynamics...inflation pressure is pretty immaterial because in either situation you're deflating enough that bead issues can rear their head from impact.

MT tread patterns are ideal for 90% of offroading, and average for the rest. The others have the reverse ratio.

I tried to be civil and not a punk... Re-read where I give your reply credit... but just clarify it is obvious when the photo shows 10 psi on a mud terrain and 32 psi on an all terrain (which didn't get stuck)... after both passed over the same sand. OK?
