new guy looking for info on 2011 tacoma

convince me that i wanna buy a new tacoma and why. coming from a jeep grand cherokee that needs replacing. thanks for all your thoughts in advance

I just bought my first taco on 7/13 of this year (06 Access Cab TRD 4x4) and absolutely love it. They're awesome trucks. Thats all you need to know.

 

I haven't had mine for very long, so no issues yet. Except maybe gas mileage. I've filled up 4 times and haven't gotten better than 16.8mpg. I don't have any mods yet and I was only "heavy" on the pedal the first couple of tanks. I just got back from a road trip and got 16.7ish. mostly interstate driving, at 70-80mph. guess that doesn't help.

 

I'm averaging 19.2 on my 11. I have hit over 20 twice but with babying the s*** out of it and had a little more hwy miles on them tanks.

Not a bad truck. I've had it for 6 months now. I am heavy on the foot and drive as fast as I can with no respect for slow drivers around me. Yes you know who you are.
I still get 18 on the highway but if I set the cruise at 72, I'll get 20. Well sort of, the cruise control doesn't really work on any of the Tacomas but that's a whole other topic.
The vibration is terrible, my right passenger seat shakes if there is nobody there, but that's just normal, right? That's what everyone says, cuz it's a truck, right?
If you want a smaller truck that looks cool and you don't actually need to tow more than 3000 pounds much, I'd say it's nice. It's supposed to be really nice off road, but mine with 8000 miles on it shakes in the steering wheel like there is something loose even on a stone driveway. Let's see, everyone here has either been thru 2 or 3 fan motors because they chirp and tick louder than your radio or like me I just deal with it because I know if I go to the dealer and get it fixed, it will just start making noise again in 4 weeks. The road noise is loud, so maybe upgrade to the JBL system. If you want some power you can add a super charger for only $5000. Or you can go buy the new F-150 with the new 5.0 which I test drove. It will get the same gas milage and has 100 HP more than the Tacoma. I wanted a smaller truck and unfortunately my Nissan fell apart with under 50K miles on it so I thought I'd give Toyota a try. I'm not impressed at all.
No offense to anyone here, I like the truck, just not impressed with the quality of Toyota. I actually would like to piss on the Q.C. manager headquarters. No homo.

 

no big complaints yet. passenger side seat vibrates/makes noise when empty, and the seal on the driver side door sucks.

i can live with those things

I just within the past month sold a jeep grand cherokee and bought an 11 Tacoma.

For one thing, you won't be trying to keep a Jeep running anymore, you'll be in a Toyota. Hello, peace of mind. I swear that Jeep had a nice motor but everything else fell apart around it.

Secondly, the way it drives is fantastic. I have the TRD Sport, but any of the ones you drive will be smoother than the JGC and respond much more nicely than you are used to. Smoother in terms of throttle response, and also as it relates to the suspension. I've just crossed 2,000 miles in mine, and it's feeling like it's broken in and really performing smoothly now.

I like the JGC's winter capabilities, and I haven't had the taco in winter yet, but I expect it will be great. See my location... I know one or two things about winter...

Seating position is noticably higher than what you are driving now. It's a nice feeling in traffic for everyone's roof to be at/below your eye level.

Definitely more power than you are used to as well, and with the V6 you'll be driving something that makes good power down low and cruises at highway speed at lower RPM than you're used to.

Fuel economy in a new taco versus a new jeep will be similar, but a new taco versus an old jeep, probably gain a MPG or two (my JGC seemed to be getting horrid mileage as it crossed over 100k miles and beyond)

In short, winter capability and fuel economy are probably a wash, but the Tacoma wins in all other areas.

I've owned 5 Toyotas...I still have my 1999 extended cab Tacoma with 200k miles on the original clutch...it's lifted, it's been wheeled, it has pulled landscaping equipment. I now have a '11 as well with a '11 Sienna.

Reliabilty.

 

I've worked at both Dodge/Jeep and Toyota. When I worked at Dodge/Jeep, about 72% of our daily work was warranty and recalls. At Toyota, about 11% of our work was warranty/recalls.
At Dodge/Jeep, a customer would come in pushing 100,000 miles and need much work and parts replaced, quite often they would trade in at this point.
At Toyota, I saw a great number of customers with well over 200,000 miles, and still an excellent vehicle, many customers give their old Toyotas to their kids.
I was amazed at how long these vehicles last- With Regular Maintenance.
Would I ever buy another domestic-... No Way.
Wouls I ever buy another Toyota-... You Bet

I have had Fords, Chevys, Chryslers, Isuzus, Subaru, Hondas. I get a new car every 5 years (company required) and average 20k a year. I am on my second Tacoma (2005 and 2011). Toyotas fit and finish, reliability and resale are better then all of them.

Like Jeeps, they are fun off road and have a ton of aftermarket parts, unlike Jeeps you will spend less time fixing, more time driving.

And TW is great (even the Canadians).

 

Convince yourself, go test drive both of them. Open the hoods, kick the tires, crank the radio and floor it a few times. Do what you need to convince yourself. Just don't change the oil without knowing WTF you're doing!

Some people have mistakenly pulled the drain plug for the transmission instead of the oil.

There was even one unfortunate thread where someone drained the transmission fluid, then added the oil per normal, then drove around... with no transmission fluid and massively overfilled oil.

All you need to know is, be sure of the plug you are pulling.
