TRD Sport owners / winter question

I'm wondering, how do the stock BS Duelers on the sport model do in the winter?

Love the way they ride and (don't) sound on the freeway, but I wonder about the winter. Any thoughts?

 

They do fine but have their limits depending on how deep the snow is.

 

Have you thought about Michelins? They ride very nice, are quiet and still pretty good in the snow.

 

They did fine on my 2007 TRD Sport, but as Pugga said, once you get into a ton of snow, not many tires are going to do all that well unless you go studded.

I was a firefighter back then and responded to several calls in the middle of winter with 4-5" of packed snow on the ground and it did just fine in 4WD.

We had record snowfall here in mid Missouri last winter. Several storms - one that dumped nearly two feet of snow at once. After that one there was about 2-3 days were only vehicles with 4WD could get around. I had no problems in my 2010 DBL CAB Sport 4x4. It has the stock tires and I got around fine. Now, I wasn't looking to try and get stuck - but the plows didn't even make it into the subdivisions and side streets for about a week - so had to drive through some nasty stuff. Left it in 4HI the whole time and never even felt like I might get stuck. Granted - these are not the tires for an arctic expedition - but we just had probably the nastiest winter, with regards to frequency and amount of snow, in my lifetime (I'm 46) and they did fine. If I lived in Minnesota or Alaska I might feel different - but no problem in Missouri.

 

Having grown up in MO and being in MN now... there's more than a little difference in snowfall!

i ran them for 2 winter,they do the job just fine ,you just gotta be careful,last winter went to goodyear duratrac which was a great improvement

 

I did fine last winter with the stock duelers and my truck is a prerunner.

 

I only drove for a few months out in CO with them. I felt like I could always get going but I wan't to put some snows on this winter. I really never had a problem with 2WD and snows up here, but am happy to have the added ground clearance + 4WD to plow through now. I really just want to be safe and have as much stopping power as possible at hand, especially with a light back end. Most problems I've seen or experienced come along with stopping.

 

I couldn't get rid of them fast enough. I had them on my 2010 TRD Sport DCLB one winter and immediately decided to replace them with Duratrac's. Now I know these tires cannot be compared to each other but the stock Duelers are throw aways and are placed on the truck at the factory primarily to help meet the fuel numbers. While searching for replacement tires I asked a local tire dealer about the Bridgestone Duelers that came stock and he said I can't buy that exact tire retail, it is a factory install only tire. He said you can buy a Dueler but it's not the same tire. I say this because I know the Duelers on my Tacoma were factory and they sucked, can't speak for the retail version though. On the other hand the Wrangler Duratrac's are GREAT! however a bit noisy.

If you get as much snow as I think you do in MN, I wouldn't run the stock tires and rims in the winter. If you have the means, get a set of winter rims and tires. I got a set of Toyo G-02 winter tires last winter and couldn't get that baby stuck if I tried (and I did). Also, the longer you keep the stock rims away from snow, ice and salt, the longer they will last.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead. However I will be going to Mammoth next weekend and its forcasted to snow. I just wanted to confirm that the stock duelers on my 4x4 Trd Sport will do fine in the NorCal snow. This is my first truck so i wanted to hear from you experienced guys how did they perform.

 

I would at least run them for now. If YOU decide that they are ji good then replace them. They are not the most amazing tire ever made, byt they will work no problem. I wouldn't go and throe them away hust because people on a website are telling you to.
I have bever replaced stock tires with the same tire, but never found any of them to be dangerous.

 

I have a TRD Sport, live in Colorado, and have driven around on the BS Dueler tires in the snow. They do well, I was impressed with the performance in deeper snow ~10-12". This was just driving around the neighborhood and to work. No steep hills or anything. Stopping distance and not pushing through turns is an issue though. I went ahead and bought a set of Firestone Winterforce LT (studded) and got them mounted up on a separate set of wheels. These Bridgestone Duelers HT will be my spring-summer set.

Sound good. Mammoth is fairly straight drive not mountainous at all. At most that weekend 1" lol

 

I'm not a big fan of the Sport OEM tires, not very good in the snow, and not very good in the rain. Couple that with the electronic rear diff of the Sport and you can have some scary moments in the snow. I'm looking forward to the day when the tires get replaced, I'm stuck with the electronic diff .... I miss the locker of my old TRD OffRoad yet I'm lovin' the better ride and no bottoming out.

 

Good to know. I've got some for snow use. This will be my first experience outside of using dedicated snow tires. My expectations are high.

 

I did not like the stock tires in the snow. I replaced them with bridgestone blizzaks and they are fantastic in the snow. I swap the stock tires back in the spring and run them until fall.
