Ok....Im sure everyone has heard about Toyota buying back alot of the Tacomas like mine. (1995 4x4 extended cab SR5) from what ive heard there was a rusting frame issue on these certain years. So I took my truck into the dealer to get inspected and they said it was like new! Mind u... I live in Detroit with bad winters and salt. And there has been no aftermarket undercoating. so whats up? why hasnt my truck have any rusting issues? Not that Im complaining because I love this truck! 258000 miles and still running great with no oil buring or smoke! love it!

Im not great with computers.....I'll try and get some picks up tho. My truck is the same truck as Toyota used in there dealership pamplet. Same year, model and color too (that purplish blue) In the literature the guy had 350000 miles on it with all the original engine componets. Its kinda what got me into toyotas. Now I own two 1991 MR2 turbos (love them) a 89 Supra And my truck. The truck is the work horse tho!!! And even tho I need a water pump on it as we speak, its still been an awesome truck. Got the water pump....I just wish it would warm up around here so i could put it on! Dame....Im rambling......lol!

Welcome to TW! I hope you aren't too dissappointed that your truck is solid. It is a true testament to the build quality that Toyota has to offer.

You had a good batch of steel when your frame was made. There are certain batches of steel that seemed to be more susceptible to rust issues. Though I am DARNED amazed that living in Detroit you have what the dealership calls zero rust!!!!

The recal is specific to 1st gen Taco's because some of those frames had perferations in them that seemed to make it easier for rust to eat all the way through (between perferations!)

I might get a second opinion just in case (at another dealership). My Sig others 4 runner came from Loraine Ohio (a 93 4 runner so only 2 years older than yours). His rig is the Joke of all us Colorado folks because it is a rust nightmare. I mean seriously! We had to totally take apart his front end last year and replace the A-arms and ball joints because of rust. Then this last fall we scrapped his rear suspension because one of his lower control arms about rusted through. (We designed and welded on a new 4 link).

So while the dealership did say you are good to go, get a second opinion. Then if they still say you are OK... Then you ARE! (Lucky you?!?!)

Hey, thanks Lysmachia... Your info is pretty accurate from what ive heard also. But im a pretty dame good mechanic. (in my own mind...lol) and Ive inspected it my self a number of times. Its funny cause my buddy bought his 97 and it was totally rusted in the dealer inspection and they bought him out for a great price!!. Im driving mine till it dies! no rust on the body very little on the frame...The only things thats rusting is the aftermarket running board pipes i put on 6 years ago!

You must spray your underbody with PAM every week.

PAM cooking spray... it's not just for Iron Chef anymore... :D
